Are larger vehicles more difficult for beginning drivers to drive?
Q. My husband has found a full-sized chevy bronco that he wants to buy for our son for his first vehicle. I like the safety aspect, but I feel that a teen driving a huge vehicle is more likely to have an accident due to inexperience. I personally have always found huge vehicles intimidating and more difficult to judge distances but my husband disagrees and does not see any difference. Anyone have any information on the subject?

A. I like driving a small sedan (Honda Civic) because easy to park, easy to turn, low cost to maintain. I have been driving automatic transmission now for decades. Sometimes in a distant city I need to rent a car. I am no longer able to drive stick shift. My reflexes are attuned to the smaller car ... I have a real hard time how much space to allow for cornering, what's needed for turning, backing up etc. For a new driver, I think a mid sized car is probably better for long term driving skills. Your son can go with a more compact car once he has picked up the basic skills. You might also look at the insurance costs. There are reasons why some cars have big differences in rates. Why do school buses and transportation vehicles have to stop at a train track?
Q. I dont understand why school buses and transportation vehicles have to stop at train tracks when there is no flashing lights or the gate isnt lowered. How many times has a train ever passed through a railroad crossing without indicating that it is going to do so? I just dont really understand why they do that. I have to say this now that i have read your posts and that is if SAFETY is a priority among transportation vehicles and school buses then why doesnt everyone stop and listen for trains? Shouldnt we all be doing that?

A. I will agree that on the surface it may seem silly, but the law is there for a very very good reason. safety the crossing gates and protective devices are not foolproof, they are mechanical devices and can and do fail. The only sure way to be absolutely postiively safe is to look, both ways every time. Dont ever allow a mechanical device to tell you the coast is clear. do it yourself. That is exactly what buses are required to do because crossing protection is NOT reliable enough. P.S. love the avatar btw, Tolkein rules!!

What are some good quality gas efficiant vehicles?
Q. Im looking for a gas friendly car but you never know the level of quality. My wife thinks that american cars have poor quality compared to foreign vehicles. Women are picky so i just want to know some good quality gas efficient vehicles preferably foreign. thank you.

A. Toyota or Hundai are good (foreign). For fuel efficiency it is of course best to get a standard 4 door regular car size. If you got money you can buy a hybrid as those save a lot of money on gas.
