How can I get rid of a tumor on a goldfish's head?
Q. One of the goldfish in my preschool classroom has had a growing tumor on his head for the past 6-8 months. It started out small, and at first I thought it was part of his skin. They are regular goldfish, not popeye ones. I have tried a variety of meds-nothing has worked. The kids are always asking me why he has the tumor and I tell them he has a boo-boo. It does not seem to hinder the fish in any way.

A. There's really not much that can be done for a tumor on a fish except to keep an eye on it. As long as it's growing externally and not internally, not inhibiting the fish, not interfering with eating, swimming, or vision, then there's no reason to do anything. If there are signs of these problems then the choices are to have it surgically removed (usually only done for very expensive fish) or to euthanize it. On very rare occasions, they have been known to shrink on their own but don't expect it to happen. The best thing you can do is make sure to keep the water clean with regular maintenance. This won't directly effect the tumor, but it will help your fish fight off other problems so it doesn't have to fight off more than one thing… [cont.]

How to console somebody that may have a tumor?
Q. What to reply to somebody that just emailed you saying that the doctors found a new possible tumor. She already had gone thru Kimo therapy like ~1 moth ago. And I forget to mention she lives in Arizona and I live in California so we don't see each other much at all. It's just basically by myspace and maybe text. But she's been a good host to us when we do go down there.

A. If they are writing you, write them back and let them know how sorry you are that they are going through so much. If you are in a position to visit them, call and see if you can. Let her vent and hold her hand, give her a hug. Just be friends.

What does it mean when the doctor says a tumor has a tail?

A. A 'Tail' in tumors indicates that the tumor is growing, and expanding into the direction of least resistance. Since cancerous tumors grow faster than benign tumors, a tumor with a tail can indicate a stronger chance that the tumor is cancerous. but not always. My father had a tumor that wrapped around his tibia, that had a tail and was quite large. Prior to surgery the Drs. gave him a 80/20 probability that it was cancerous. It was benign, and they removed95% of the tumor, unable to reach the final section behind the bone. 6 months later, the tumor had grown completely back, and was 20% larger. The doctors now anticipated that the prob was 90%. The tumor again was benign, andf this time all of it removed. So dont worry, as worry wont… [cont.]
