Can I keep cardinal tetras with a black ghost knife fish and two African butterfly fish?
Q. I would like to keep two African butterfly fish and one black ghost knife fish (3inches) with cardinal tetras and xl penguin tetras. Is this ok or will the tetras get eaten.
Asked by Mathew - Thu Jul 9 06:48:09 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. African butterfly fish, also known as Pantodons, have very large mouths and will easily swallow a cardinal tetra. At the price of cardinal tetras, I would not suggest it. Some fish stores say that you can keep neon tetras with black ghost knife fish but in my experience the black ghost knife will usually eat the neons. You might get lucky and get one that does not but again your chances are not good. A three inch black ghost knife is just a baby so if you can get neons cheaply enough start with a big school and if they don't disappear you can add a few Cardinals from time to time. I used to be able to buy small neon tetras for 20 cents each. Now they are about $2 each. Depending upon the size of your pocket book and the size of your… [cont.]

How many cardinal tetras can I add to my aquarium?
Q. Ok so I have a 10 gallon aquarium with a danio and two glowlight tetras. I was planning on adding 3 more glowlights. After that, can I and how many cardinal tetras can I add. If none what would u suggest I add? Thnx. Also I'm considering neons so would they have same space specifications as cardinals? And would they be a good choice?
Asked by Stan - Sun Mar 8 00:22:21 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'd actually suggest filling out the schools you currently have. You need at least two more danio and another glowlight. Cardinals need to be in groups of 6 or more to be Truly happy and adventurous, so I don;t think, even with what you have, that you could safely have them in there : ( Instead, how about filling in the schools you have and maybe adding one killi fish instead? They;re hard to find, but are very striking when you do! They'll hang out around the top and are a great fish for smaller aquariums. Or maybe a few shrimp to help with the flooring, their bio load is pretty low so you could have a few and be ok. Best of Luck!

Can tetras tolerate a little bit of salt?
Q. I just got a 10 gallon tank with tetras. I have a 20 gallon tank with guppies, a molly and a platy. In my 20 gallon, I always add a spoonful of salt. Because of that routine, I started accidentally adding salt to my 10 gallon as well. I stopped now, and my tetras are doing good, but can they tolerate salt? I will choose best answer and all answers will be appreciated. Thanks!

A. I'm going to take a stance somewhere in between Big Gourami's and Cat's. While it is definitely not necessary, a small amount of salt (a teaspoon or two) won't harm them. However, I would NOT dose with the same concentration as the Guppies and Mollies receive. While Tetras stem from VERY fresh, soft, acidic water, acids ARE electrolytic, so it would be incorrect to say otherwise. With Tetras, much like with Loaches and scaleless fish, the worry of adding salt is NOT the electrolyte content or hardness (which is affected by aquarium salt), it is the salinity. Tetras, Cyprinids, and scaleless fish (Loaches, Puffers, Knifefish, Catfish, Morymids, and others) are relatively incapable of performing proper osmogregulation with an altered… [cont.]

Asked by Rodeo Gal - Sat Dec 6 23:38:03 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Over 6. They're schooling fish, and feel very uncomfortable without being in a group smaller than that. It depends on the kind though. With smaller tetras like neons, you could get up to 10. Any fish that can't swallow them should be fine with them. Stay away from anything with really big fins though, as the tetras might get nippy. Don't even get me started on how stupid 1 inch of fish per gallon is. Just imagine a 20 inch arowana in a 20 gallon.

What types of fish are compatable with tetras in an aquarium?
Q. I have a 20 Gal with four tetras in it two white ones with blue and pink coloration respectfully on top and two so called "poor mans bleeding heart" tetras. Just wondering what types of larger fish would get along well with them.

A. If you want something bigger that can go with them you should look into dwarf cichlids, if you are new to them I would start with Rams or Keyhole cichlids, just make sure to provide them with a hiding place (rocks, clay pots...) or two and they will get along great with your fish and they are beautiful. Hope this helps.

A. I have head and tail light tetras and they used to do the same thing. Now I try to turn lights off one a time in the rooms where I keep fish. For example, at 10:30 PM the aquarium light turns off (I use a timer), but I have a desk lamp on the other side of the room that I leave on for another hour or so. That way, they aren't too startled by the darkness. If they're suddenly in the dark, they can get stressed out and dart around. It's made a big difference for my tetras!

Neon Tetras and Glow Light Tetras in the same tank will they get along?
Q. I just introduced 4 glow light tetras to my 8 neon tetras. So far they seem to be getting along just fine. Will these fish get along? What will happen if I introduce black neon tetras next?
Asked by Dr. Ernest J Folk - Sat Mar 29 01:16:48 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most Tetra will get along fine. Even Black neon(light) tetra...(which arent really tetra by family class), will get along fine with the glow light and neons. The only Tetra ya need to worry about are the bigger ones...like the Blackskirt, Colombian, and Mexican Tetras. They can be a bit aggressive to smaller fish. I have 5 neon tetra, 3 Glow light tetra, 6 Black light Tetra, 2 Head light/Tail light Tetra all in same tank. Best of Luck!

Are gouramis and bleeding heart tetras compatible?
Q. I am going to get a ten gallon aquarium this week, with a filter and a heater. And I am now debating on what type of fish to keep. So, I was wondering if I could put gouramis and bleeding heart tetras together? I was planning on keeping two blue gouramis, and six bleeding heart tetras. Or would that overcrowd my aquarium? Thank you for your time! And I will be choosing a best answer, and giving all good answers thumbs up!
Asked by Skye - Mon May 18 20:47:42 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Blue gouramis will get too large for that tank. Bleeding hearts already get pretty large, so either keep a school of bleeding hearts, or perhaps with a dwarf gourami. Fortunately, bleeding hearts are not as active as some of the more streamlined tetras, so behaviorally, they should be alright in that size tank, though I've never tried it. This is a lot of fish for the tank still, though, so keep up on your 30-50% weekly water changes.

Why do my tetras go crazy when I turn the light on?
Q. I just bought black neon tetras a couple of days ago and whenever i turn my light on the aquarium, they freak out, go to the bottom and in the corner. What is the problem???
Asked by mulimulix - Mon Jun 23 03:07:28 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This is very common with most fish, especially Tetras, and especially newly introduced fish. Compare it to walking out of a dark theater and into the bright light-- it doesn't feel great-- now imagine that magnified by about 10. The fish are trying to slowly adjust to the light, but they don't have a spot to shade themselves. The best way to prevent this is with a lot of tall plants that will offer them shelter. Also, new fish are still likely quite stressed, and things like the light turning on will affect them more than other fish... On top of that, Tetras are very slow to "wake up", often taking several minutes to become fully aware.

What is the difference between male and female neon tetras?
Q. I have about 15 neon tetras and most info I can find say its all in the body shape but 6 of mine have the red stripe half way up there body and the rest have it all the way, is this anything to do with there sex?
Asked by __A_YAHOO_USER__ - Thu Jun 25 07:46:02 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The red stripe the full way up the body are Cardinal Tetras, not Neons, they'll get larger than the Neons and can be more fragile. Neon Tetra: Cardinal Tetra: To tell the sex, mature females will have a much thicker broader and more rounded body compared to the more sleek males. In Neons the blue line will have more of a kink upwards half way along compared to the straighter males.

A. all tetras need to be in groups of 5 or more, black skirts are kind of large and aggressive, they need to be in a tank no smaller than 20 gallons, groups of 6 or more is better for these fish to keep the aggression down. feed some freeze dreid blood worms 2-3 times a week and they will be much healthier and colorfull

What are some colorful tetras I can add to my tank?
Q. I have a 55 gallon tank that has 6 cardnial tetras, 3 neon tetras, 2 I believe are blood fin tetras and a long fin black skirt tetra. I have 4 bio wheels running(2 filters), naturally planted, heated and it has drift wood in it. I'm eventually going to get dwarf cichlids. My husband wants some colorful fish and I was wondering if any of you guys have any suggestions?
Asked by jo p - Sat Jan 9 18:12:26 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Larger schools are more interesting ... so up the Cardinals and Neons. For a larger Tetra I like Emperors... school of 6 with larger schools of smaller will add the life and color you want. With the filtration you are running on the 55g,there is no reason that you can't add the extra Blood Fin to round out that species school. Think the Long Fin Black Skirt detracts from what you are trying to accomplish and would remove it all together instead of adding any more.

A. You could get up to six Neon Tetras. The colours will all go so beautifully together! Between the brightness of the Dwarf's and the Neon's! Your tank will look great, but be sure to try to pick the healthy, active looking ones! P.S. Wow another Dwarf Gourami lover! I'm so happy because I, myself have four of them- aren't they the cutest?!

A. Tetras are a very hard species of fish to breed. Here's a site that can help if your planning on breeding them: Note that these guys are "egg scatterers" and the parents will eat the fry. To breed them you need slightly acidic water and you need to feed them live foods to encourage them. If you want an easy fish to breed get live bearers. These guys don't lay eggs but have live babies in an aquarium. They breed like crazy and have around 30 fry in each batch. You can easily feed the fry crushed fish flakes while in tetras they need to br feed microscopic foods since they are so small. The types of live bearing fish are mollies platies guppies and sword tails. Here's a picture of a blue male guppy: females tend to be larger then males… [cont.]

How do I keep my rainbow sharks from eating my neon tetras??
Q. It seems as though my rainbow sharks keep eating my neon tetras. I have recently purchased 18 and I only have 3 remaining. I have bought guppies and ghost shrimp to try and keep them away from the tetras but it doesn't seem to be working. Any suggestions?
Asked by Tricia :0) - Tue Jul 4 21:44:08 2006 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If a fish thinks it could eat another fish in the tank, it will try. Neons also are very sensitive - they may simply be dying off. The best way to figure out if they're simply dying (then getting eaten) or if they're getting eaten alive is to put a tank divider in and seperate the two species (you can get one at your local pet store). My guess is the latter of the two, as rainbows tend to be docile.

A. If you have both sexes, it will be fairly obvious if you view them head on. Healthy females almost always fill with eggs, causing them to swell outwards to become about 3-4 times as thick as the males. Also, males commonly have a taller dorsal fin.
