A solvent is a liquid or gas that dissolves a solid, liquid, or gaseous solute, resulting in a solution.

The most common solvent in everyday life is water. Most other commonly-used solvents are organic (carbon-containing) chemicals. These are called organic solvents. Solvents usually have a low boiling point and evaporate easily or can be removed by distillation, leaving the dissolved substance behind. To distinguish between solutes and solvents, solvents are usually present in the greater amount. Solvents can also be used to extract soluble compounds from a mixture, the most common example is the brewing of coffee or tea with hot water. Solvents are usually clear and colorless liquids and many have a characteristic odor. The concentration of a solution is the amount of compound that is dissolved in a certain volume of solvent. The solubility is the maximal amount of compound that is soluble in a certain volume of solvent at a specified temperature. Common uses for organic solvents are in dry cleaning (e.g. tetrachloroethylene), as paint thinners (e.g. toluene, turpentine), as nail polish removers and glue solvents (acetone, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate), in spot removers (e.g. hexane, petrol ether), in detergents (citrus terpenes), in perfumes (ethanol), and in chemical syntheses. The use of inorganic solvents (other than water) is typically limited to research chemistry and some technological processes.

In 2005, the worldwide market for solvents had a total volume of around 17.9 million tons, which led to a turnover of about 8 billion Euro.

What is a chaser solvent and why do you use it?
Q. I'm taking an organic chem course and we are doing a lab to remove Alkenes from Alcohols, specifically cyclohexene from cyclohexanol. In the procedure we use toluene as a "chaser solvent", adding it after distilling the alcohol, and then we distill again. Unfotunately I simply don't really know what a chaser solvent is or why we use it.

A. A chaser solvent or pusher solvent is sometimes used to help blast your compound off the surface of the packing material. It should have a tremendously high boiling point relative to what you were fractionating. After you've collected most of one fraction, some of the material is left on the column. So, you throw this chaser solvent into the distillation flask, fire it up, and start to distill the chaser solvent. As the chaser solvent comes up the column, it heats the packing material, your compound is blasted off the column packing, and more of your compound comes over. Stop collecting when the temperature starts to rise - that's the chaser solvent coming over now. As an example, you might expect p-xylene (bp 138.4 C) to be a really good… [cont.]

Why should the solvent in a recrystallization not be boiled off as a means of recovering the crystals?
Q. I thought it might be because a hot solvent could dissolve some of the crystals and result in loss of product. Is there a better answer to this? Chances of bumping maybe?

A. To get the best crystals you must let the crystal form spontaneously. So usually you would saturate a hot solution and let it cool down. as slowly as possible so that the crystals form slowly. If they form fast (like by boiling off the solvent of putting the hot solution in the fridge), the crystals may trap impurities from the mother liquor
