Gamma-poisson distribution of bacteria?
Q. Here's the question. Assume Y denotes the number of bacteria per cubic centimeter in a particular liquid and that Y has a Poisson distribution with parameter Lambda. Further assume that lambda varies from location to location and has a gamma distribution with parameters alpha and beta, where alpha is a positive integer. If we randomly select a location, what is the A. expected number of bacteria per cubic centimeter B. standard deviation of the number of bacteria per cubic centimeter. I know that mu(poisson) = var(poisson) = lambda...but how does the fact that lambda is also an rv with mu= alpha * beta and var = alpha * beta ^ 2 affect the calculations of the expected value and SD of Y?

A. I was able to locate a reference. Section 2 'Modeling the frequncy...' deals with the mean and variance of the Gamma-Poisson distribution. This is the best I can do for the moment.
