Are there any regulations for rv construction?
Q. I live in michigan, and just wondering yet another random thing. I know in order to be considered an rv, a unit must contain I believe either a bathroom, or a kitchen, or sleeping quarters. If someone could clarify that, it would be wonderful. More importantly, are there any regulations on rv construction, such as materials, safety, etc. Can I build one out of cardboard and aluminum foil? lol, just wondering.

A. The RVIA sets standards and does testing for manufactured RVs. There are no standards for a home built RV in MI other than the motor vehicle code and certain rules for the use of propane. good luck

I plan on living in an RV to save money, where are the cheap campgrounds?
Q. People who have lived on the road before, please help! I plan on living in an RV for awhile, but need places with power cheap. I have protection so safety doesn't have to be highest on the list. Is it best and cheapest to stay in rest stops? Is that legal? How about some cheap places with power and water? Any websites with people offering power and water?
Asked by Jet - Sat Aug 1 13:59:15 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Not sure that would be the cheapest way to go. Gas is expensive! Especially in an RV. If you did find a cheap campground and were able to stay for an extended period, you'd need another vehicle so that you don't have to unhook for every trip to the supermarket. In addition, even the cheapest campgrounds are $10 / day or $300 / month. You might be able to find a rental for less in the Southeast US. If you decide to do it, here's what I'd do: Look up "boondocking" It's for RVers who avoid campgrounds and just park where they can. Walmart used to be friendly to boondockers providing they were just passing through since they would spend money there. Not sure if this is still true. Rest stops could work too. When boondocking, you… [cont.]

Can a deisel converted to veg oil work on a 30+ foot RV? Will it be efficient & how about MPG 7 Safety?
Q. I'd love to have an RV, but I would not love to spend or expend the the money, energy, and waste involved in operating either gas or diesel RV. Also, if we could do this we could save a fortune and a ton of gas every year--my husband must commute 160 miles every day. Is a veg oil CAR safe and reliable for long commutes daily, or an RV for long trips? Is it really aprox U.S. $1,000.00 to convert from Diesel?
Asked by deigratiaamen - Mon Mar 17 23:31:21 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Diesel engines were originally designed to run on peanut oil. Conversion consists mostly of filtration technology. Of course it's safe and reliable.

RV travel from US to Panama - possible? safe?
Q. Travel from US through all Central America countries to Panama. Primary concerns: 1. safety; 2. roads for large RV;
Asked by garrypyh - Tue Nov 21 15:59:10 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Of course you can do it, and as a matter of fact there are people who do it all the time. There is a group from Texas that makes the trip every year. It is better to travel in numbers, of course, so if you're considering making this drive then you might want to hook up with a couple of other RV's and do a caravan. Take the time to research your requirements for border crossings and things like visas, and don't forget that you might have different requirements for inoculations so be sure to bring a current shot record. And from listening to others who have done the trip before I would recommend bringing extra spare tires because the roads are not very good in places (especially Nicaragua). And if you are going to bring pets or animals… [cont.]

Are there any interracial couples that full time RV?
Q. My fiancee and I are an interracial couple, obviously assuming I'm white which I am(screen name usually gives that away. Lol) - Anyway, we are thinking of full-time RVing at a campground locally as a way to save money and with that we'd have a substantial amount saved yearly. Yet I've looked into most of the campgrounds close to our work and near our families and this may sound hypocritical but they're filled with a bunch of same race couples and a lot of them have confederate flags posted by their RV's. Granted I have a few of those flags myself but I was curious on the safety or if there is any other interracial couples that live in an RV full time? If so; in a somewhat non-diverse area is it safe? I'd hate to move in and be harassed… [cont.]

A. You're in an RV. If someone harasses you. Move. It's that simple. It's the same thing you would face if you moved into a Brick and Mortar house. If someone harasses you, call the cops. They are there to protect you. There might be a few narrow minded people in this world. But overall people are much more accepting of others. I find it interesting that you're being Racist and Judgmental when you admit that you own the same flag they do. Why is it so hard for you to believe that perhaps someone might think just like you and find your lifestyle acceptable and still fly the Confederate Flag? Not to mention. They are campgrounds. People come and go.

Which vacuum hoses on a 4BBl carburetor can be plugged and which cannot?
Q. converting to a different carb, got the choke and throttle issues worked out, but vacuum hoses seem to be a challenge. I want to plug any that will not affect safety. It's on a 78 Dodge 440 in an RV

A. "Converting to a different carb?" Let me guess - you're going from a Stromberg to a side draft Weber? Need more information. Usually, any port on the carburetor that isn't used by the engine can be plugged.

Don't know where to put carseat in RV Coachmen Santara 1995. Where is it safe for 3month old? Ready to give up
Q. Is it safe side facing on couch? Just got a Safety 1st carseat. The only rearfacing is on the dinette booth chair but it doesn't fit completely when i put the table down. The carseat goes a bit back when i do that. Is this a big problem or not? Removed back cushion from dinette chair and the carseat fit perfect, except now there is hard wood in front of baby instead of cushion. Is it safer to just hold her with me on the bed in the back, carry her around with me tight and sit with her on my lap. Help! Planes allow children to be on parent's laps. How do people do it with this kind of situation?
Asked by rcarolyn28 - Mon May 19 18:45:07 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. All carseats and boosters seats MUST be used on a forward facing vehicle seat. Unfortunately there is no safe place to put a carseat in an RV. You will need to take an additional vehicle and follow the RV. Sorry!

A question about camper/motorhome seatbelts?
Q. The truck we will be traveling in has no seatbelts in the back, and although it's legally exempt, I would like to install some for the safety of those riding in the back (ME!). Can someone suggest a place where I can go and get whatever supplies and instructions I will need? I rented an RV once that had four seatbelts in the back, two per each seat at the table area. They seemed to be harnessed to the frame, which seems like something I could do easily enough. Searching via the internet hasn't helped me. Can you? Thanks for reading and best wishes to you.

I had a dream of zombie apocalypse?
Q. First it all started out at my house and my dad was feeling uneasy about the news about the zombie outbreak on the news, I told him that we should destroy the stairs and take refuge in our second floor home for safety, (I got that idea from this zombie survival guide I read a way while back in 7th grade) he said that would work but I think he ignored me because so much was on his mind. Next in the next part of my dream I saw my parents with a bunch of people leaving in RV that was pulling a Denali. I was still in the house when the were leaving and by the looks of it they seemed like they were in a hurry so I ran got outside and got to the car just in time. For some odd reason me and my mom were in the Denali and not in the RV witch is… [cont.]

Can I keep a collar and a harness on my 6 mo old cat for 1 week or longer while I travel?
Q. My husband and I are going home tomorrow after 1 week on the road in our RV. We have our 6 month rescue kitten fitted with a harness for safety and he seems to be comfortable with it, although I notice the skin on his back seems to crawl more often now and I am wondering if this is a reaction to the harness, or just a natural thing that I am just noticing now since we are in a closer environment. The harness is not too snug, I can put one or two fingers between him and it. When we get home, I will remove the harness and see if the skin crawling stops, although, I wouldn't mind keeping him in a harness and collar indefinitely as long as we adjust it for his growth. He is a good traveler snoozing in his crate about half the time, on my… [cont.]

12 volt lighting for Home?
Q. Just thinking thing over. Want to install a 120 volt AC to12 volt DC converter, as the ones found in most RV's. The 12 volt would be used power 12 volt light fixtures as one found in RV's, and Marine crafts. The 12 volts could be used with a solar panel. The solar panel would be used to charge a 12 volt battery(s), and the 12 volt battery could be used to power the lights during the night. I thought of using resistors for each light within the low voltage lighting electrical wires to control even distribution of lighting. The 12 volt distribution panel can as a battery charger when needed. This panel is rated a 50 amps. A few more 12 volt recessed lights mostly rated at 10 watts and these are xenon lights. The electrical lines… [cont.]

A. Just not very realistic. You're talking about 120W. of incandescent light for an entire house. It's about enough for one large room. A refrigerator will draw about 800W. while running, a microwave or toaster 1200-1500W.
