A roof is the covering on the uppermost part of a building. A roof protects the building and its contents from the effects of weather. Structures that require roofs range from a letter box to a cathedral or stadium, dwellings being the most numerous.

In most countries a roof protects primarily against rain. Depending upon the nature of the building, the roof may also protect against heat, sunlight, cold and wind. Other types of structure, for example, a garden conservatory, might use roofing that protects against cold, wind and rain but admits light. A verandah may be roofed with material that protects against sunlight but admits the other elements.

The characteristics of a roof are dependent upon the purpose of the building that it covers, the available roofing materials and the local traditions of construction and wider concepts of architectural design and practice and may also be governed by local or national legislation.

The elements in the design of a roof are:

The material of a roof may range from banana leaves, wheaten straw or seagrass to lamininated glass, aluminium sheeting and precast concrete. In many parts of the world ceramic tiles have been the predominant roofing material for centuries.

The construction of a roof is determined by its method of support and how the underneath space is bridged and whether or not the roof is pitched. The pitch is the angle at which the roof rises from its lowest to highest point. Most domestic architecture, except in very dry regions, has roofs that are sloped, or pitched. The pitch is partly dependent upon stylistic factors, but has more to do with practicalities. Some types of roofing, for example thatch, require a steep pitch in order to be waterproof and durable. Other types of roofing, for example pantiles, are unstable on a steeply pitched roof but provide excellent weather protection at a relatively low angle. In regions where there is little rain, an almost flat roof with a slight run-off provides adequate protection against an occasional downpour.

The durability of a roof is a matter of concern because the roof is often the least accessible part of a building for purposes of repair and renewal, while its damage or destruction can have serious effects.

Can you use siding on a roof with a normal pitch, instead of roofing materials?
Q. We are putting a new roof on our garage and doing the work ourselves. We want to put on a metal roof as we did on our house a few years ago. However, I would like to find something more decorative than just the plain metal roof, since the garage & roof are in close proximity to our deck and is very visible from the house. We looked into the new metal shakes, etc., but they are very costly. So before we just give up and go with the plain metal roofing sheets, I was wondering if we could find some decorative siding (vinyl, etc) and put it on the roof instead of the sheets of plain metal roofing. The roof will be going over an existing shingle roof that is starting to lose a lot of it's shingles. Would the siding be able to shed water,… [cont.]

A. Nope, and if the shingles are deteriorating that badly you really should strip them off and check out the sheething underneath. Chances are the plywood is also shot and needs replacing.

How much should a metal roof cost for a 1200 square foot low pitch house?
Q. I live in central Louisiana and am in dire need of a new roof. I plan on obtaining a metal roof when I get my funds in order. I was wondering how much I should be saving. Any round about answer would be great. I really have no idea.

A. It really depends what kind of metal roof you use. the cheapest galvanized, corrugated steel may run $500 - $800 just for the steel sheets. Most people use this stuff on sheds or barns though. They use higher priced metal on houses. And you don't say whether you will install it or if you plan to pay someone to do it for you.

How to control condesation from forming on underside of roof?
Q. I have a 40 by 50 covered carport that is about 15 above a concrete slab. How can I stop the condensation from forming on the underside of the roof? Will a parachute material spanned from the underside of the roof stop it? Fans blowing on the roof stop it? Fans blowing on the ground stop it? It is too large to insulate.
