How to make a first sentence in reading response without a generalization?
Q. I am writing a reading response about the way you can interpret the short story The Squirrel Cage by thomas M Disch to be similar or parallel to religion. Im trying to make my first sentence something like this: In Thomas M. Disch s The Squirrel Cage , Disch uses post modern writing to evoke the readers mind to interpret his story in many different ways. I think its a generalization and my teacher docks big marks for that, how can i change it?

A. your statement does not sound like a generalization in that you specifically mention the title and author and cite a writing method that he uses. however, your first sentence is usually a thesis statement, which should be a general way of introducing your reader to the rest of the paper. your teacher shouldn't dock for being general in the first statement, as long as you back it up with specifics later. so, for your first statement, you definitely need to clarify what post modern writing is, and how the author used it to get readers to interpret his story "many different ways" actually, upon reading your first sentence again, it is actually kind of poorly written in that 1. you have a grammatical error. it should be "reader's" not "read [cont.]
