A sport is commonly defined as an organized, competitive, and skillful physical activity requiring commitment and fair play. It is governed by a set of rules or customs. In a sport the key factors are the physical capabilities and skills of the competitor when determining the outcome (winning or losing). The physical activity involves the movement of people, animals and/or a variety of objects such as balls and machines. In contrast, games such as card games and board games, though these could be called mind sports, require only mental skills. Non-competitive activities such as jogging and rock-climbing, are usually classified as recreations.

Physical events such as scoring goals or crossing a line first often define the result of a sport. However the degree of skill in some sports such as diving, dressage and figure skating is judged according to well-defined criteria. This is in contrast with other judged activities such as beauty pageants and body-building shows, where skill does not have to be shown and the criteria are not as well defined.

Accurate records are kept and updated for most sports at the highest levels, while failures and accomplishments are widely announced in sport news. Sports are most often played just for fun or for the simple fact that people need exercise to stay in good physical condition. However professional sport is a major source of entertainment.

Although they do not always succeed, sports participants are expected to display good sportsmanship, standards of conduct such as being respectful of opponents and officials, and congratulating the winner when losing.

A. You should totally do track. I had to go through the same thing, because my doctor said so and I don't know how to thank her. All sports make you try out and they break you heart if you don't make it. Track is different. You don't have to try out and you make so many friends. You get into shape and you never feel left out. Everybody on your team goes through the same experience, whether its being tired from practices or joy from winning, it's all fun. The first week might be tough and you might one to quit, but it all gets easier. After the first two weeks of practices, you'll want to go track more than ever. And it's not all running, there's jumping and throwing to. I would recommend throwing because it's easier, funner, and you feel like… [cont.]

How much money does the average person make in sports marketing?
Q. I will receive my bachelors in sport management from Ohio University with a minor in business and am looking to find a job in a sport marketing firm primarily in Chicago or a large city. I am interested in working in marketing or sponsorship and want to focus more on business rather than sports if that makes any sense. I am looking to work in the highest paid part of the sports industry but am not quite sure if sports marketing is it. Also, if any one knows any great sport marketing firms please list. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What is the origin of sports players wearing black armbands?
Q. Sports players will frequently wear black armbands to commemorate the death of a teammate or close colleague - for instance, the Liverpool/Manchester City players are wearing them today in memory of the Motherwell captain who passed away yesterday. My question(s) are: (a) Where did the wearing of black armbands first originate? Would I be correct in guessing that it's something to do with the military? (b) When was the first recorded instance of sports players wearing black armbands?

A. The wearing of black armbands is a custom which originated in Ancient Egypt and came to the West through Republican Rome, when the Toga pulla made of dark-coloured wool was worn during periods of mourning. I dont know when it was first used by sportsmen.

  • Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard for all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence: in other words it is war minus the shooting.
