Gibraltar (pronounced /dʒɨˈbrɔːltər/) is a British overseas territory located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula and Europe at the entrance of the Mediterranean overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. The territory covers 6.843 square kilometres (2.642 sq mi) and shares a land border with Spain to the north. Gibraltar has historically been an important base for the British Armed Forces and is the site of a Royal Navy base.

According to the Jane's Country Risk Ratings 2008, which measures the stability of 235 countries, territories and political entities in the world, Gibraltar is the 5th most stable territory worldwide, and the highest ranked British territory. The ratings are based on five fundamental categories: political, social, economic, external and military and security. Gibraltar has almost complete internal self-government, the Governor retaining responsibilities for external affairs, defence, internal security and the public service.

The sovereignty of Gibraltar has been a major point of contention in Anglo-Spanish relations. Gibraltar was ceded by Spain to the Crown of Great Britain in perpetuity, under the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht, though Spain asserts a claim to the territory and seeks its return. In a referendum held in 2002, Gibraltarians rejected by an overwhelming majority (99%) a proposal of shared sovereignty on which Spain and Britain were said to have reached "broad agreement". The British government has committed itself to respecting the Gibraltarians' wishes.

Not a HS essay question I promise. Hannibal Barca How did he cross the Straits of Gibraltar?
Q. The Romans, after the 1st Punic war, removed all ability of the Carthaginians to travel by sea. As I understand it. Did Hannibal cross at the Straits of Gibraltar or at another spot near by? How did his army do this? And how did they get the elephants across?

If indeed the Pillars of Herakles were located on the Straits of Gibraltar, for whom did the Pillars welcome?
Q. into the Medierranean? The Atlanteans, ancient Scandinavians, Irish, English, or Yucatan seafarers? Who do you think the Pillars were greeting? If it was not erected for outside seafarers coming in from the west, then where do you think the people of the Mediterranean were traveling to as they sailed westward through the Staits of Gibraltar? What do you think?

A. The solipsistic academe would do well to remember and contemplate that before entry to prestigious colleges was permitted, there were other archives of knowledge, other paths and modes of learning. There is the story each race, nation, culture and civilization has been telling. These are not tales penned by a single self-absorbed individual, but riveting sagas of entire peoples, orally passed down and sanctified by time. To look to these myths and legends with contempt and intellectual condescension is to covet disaster. The tribulations to which they habitually refer were not written in ink or stone, but in blood - blood dead and blood living. They are in our DNA. The human body is the scriptorium where is kept the greatest gnosis.… [cont.]
