Communication is a process of transferring information from one source to another. Communication processes are sign-mediated interactions between at least two agents which share a repertoire of signs and semiotic rules. Communication is commonly defined as "the imparting or interchange of thoughts, opinions, or information by speech, writing, or signs". Communication can be perceived as a two-way process in which there is an exchange and progression of thoughts, feelings or ideas towards a mutually accepted goal or direction.

Communication as an academic discipline has a long history.

A. I have an undergraduate degree from a top American university in Communication. In the world of academia there is a VERY distinct difference between the disciplines. Communications (plural) is interchangeable with Mass Communication, meaning it typically involves the study of media, some journalism, and the business aspects of communication such as public relations and corporate communication. Communications/Mass Comm. is typically practical and if you want to get into PR, Marketing, or Advertising, this is a good place to start. Communication (singular) is typically reserved for the study of communication theory.
