While leisure is more likely a form of entertainment or sleep, recreation is active for the participant but in a refreshing and diverting manner. As people in the world's wealthier regions lead increasingly sedentary lifestyles, the need for recreation has increased. The rise of so called active vacations exemplifies this. HealthA few individuals view recreation as largely non-productive, even trivial. Excessive recreation is not considered healthy, and may be labeled as escapism. However, research has shown that recreation contributes to satisfaction, and that the stress management aspects of it contribute to quality of life, health and wellness, happiness, and that the use of recreation as a diversion may have clinical applications to individuals with chronic pain and other health impairments. In some cultures and religions, recreation is encouraged on certain days and discouraged on others. For example, in Judaism, Shabbat is a day for recreation, study, and relaxation; many Christian churches also have Sabbath. However, others interpret Sabbath to be a day of worship without self-absorbed recreation. According to research cited in Time magazine, stress is a major factor in many of the leading causes of death in the United States. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I live in Brooklyn, New York and I don't have many friends and I am always so bored! I would like to have some fun/ recreation/ social times when I am not working. Money is not a problem. I work hard all week as a nurse. Any suggestions on how to make friends and have fun for a 40 year old lady.? Asked by Dee B - Sat May 17 22:09:58 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Forty is so young. You're in your prime. I have traveled around the world (I'm 60) and I find that when I stick out my hand and smile I make friends every where I go. After I left Germany (I was a soldier) I maintained one of the friendship I made for 38 years. So, it's up to you. Go BE a friend and your "cup" will overflow. Ball room dancing (as the other woman suggested) is good. It "forces" personal contact. Play poker. It's difficult to know what you might want to do because ... no one knows YOU. What things interest you, which will bring you into contact with people? Then do it.
