Lighting or illumination is the deliberate application of light to achieve some aesthetic or practical effect. Lighting includes use of both artificial light sources such as lamps and natural illumination of interiors from daylight. Daylighting (through windows, skylights, etc.) is often used as the main source of light during daytime in buildings given its low cost. Artificial lighting represents a major component of energy consumption, accounting for a significant part of all energy consumed worldwide. Artificial lighting is most commonly provided today by electric lights, but gas lighting, candles, or oil lamps were used in the past, and still are used in certain situations. Proper lighting can enhance task performance or aesthetics, while there can be energy wastage and adverse health effects of lighting. Indoor lighting is a form of fixture or furnishing, and a key part of interior design. Lighting can also be an intrinsic component of landscaping.

What type of lighting should I get for taking photos in a room with no natural light, such as a basement?
Q. I am getting ready to finish my basement and will be designing an area with backdrops, etc. so that I can take pictures of my son. I have a decent camera for a point and shoot (Canon A630)...and am hoping to start taking some portrait shots of my 1 year old. Since the basement has little to no natural light, I am wondering what type of lighting I should install in order to get quality photos. Do I need to invest in lighting specifically geared towards photography or can I re-create that type of lighting by finishing out the area with a certain type of light? I don't know much about the different types of photography lighting available, but I can use some of the advanced options on my camera. I am definitely still an amatuer in… [cont.]

A. You didn't say whether your camera was digital or uses film. If it uses film, the "color" of the artificial light and the amount of it will be more important than if it's a digital camera. For indoor "portrait" photography, generally the lights are set up in a particular way, generally one on each side of the front of the subject and angling down, and possibly one shining on the hair from above. You can make the shadows and even tones be any way that looks good to you, but it's best to read about what creates what effect before you try to photograph a child. In fact, if your one year old is walking, you probably will do better to take the photos outdoors, or at least have the area well and evenly lit so that you can follow him/her all… [cont.]

What are the main advantages and disadvantages of different lighting for reading?
Q. was wondering if there's any particular lighting that is better for illumination, eye strain, headaches, color of light, etc. Do some lighting sources flicker, causing eye strain? I'm wondering about incandescent, compact fluorescent, and LEDs, natural light, and candlelight. Seems natural light would be the best... however I do sometimes find it difficult to read outside on a really bright day, so maybe not. I also see an advertisement for Tensor brand full spectrum light, but I don't know what kind of bulb that has.

A. The best light source is one with a high CRI (color rendition index) value. A high CRI value produces the high contrast needed for task situations such as reading. Fluorescents typically have a much higher CRI than incandescents. LED's, which have a high CRI, are also being developed for task lighting. Avoid glare, such as being in direct view of a light source or light bulb when reading. If you are using light from the window to read, then read with your back to the window.

What is the difference between direct lighting and indirect lighting in art?
Q. i know direct lighting is when a light source is coming specifically from one side? so what is indirect lighting?
Asked by An L - Wed Jan 16 00:09:16 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Direct lighting in photography and art is when the source of light is uninterrupted while illuminating a subject. Indirect lighting is reflected off of another surface. When properly controlled or channeled, indirect lighting can provide a softer finish on the subject matter, but could also reduce the detail somewhat. Direct lighting, just the reverse, can make the detail more graphic, but then will also reveal imperfections more readily. It all depends upon the goal of the artist or photographer as to how to display a given project.
