A. Depends on nation, but I'll assume you mean US. These are Army, Air Force and Marine Officer ranks: General of the Army (5 star) used only in wartime General (4 stars) Lt General (3 stars) Maj General (2 stars) (originally stood for "Sgt Major" General which is why a "major" is lower ranked than a Lieutenant.) Brigadier General (1 Star) Colonel Lt Colonel Major Captain 1st Lt 2nd Lt E9 ("Chief Master Sergeant", "Sgt Major", "Master Gunnery Sergeant") E8 ("Senior Master Sergeant", "Master Sergeant") E7 ("Master Sergeant", "Sergeant 1st Class", "Gunnery Sergeant") E6 ("Technical Sergeant", "Staff Sergeant") E5 ("Staff Sergeant", "Sergeant, Sergeant") E4 ("Senior Airman" (USAF did away with "Sergeant"), "Corporal", "Specialist" -Army only)… [cont.]
