From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A puzzle is a problem or enigma that tests the ingenuity of the solver. In a basic puzzle one is intended to piece together objects (puzzle pieces) in a logical way in order to come up with the desired shape, picture or solution. Puzzles are often contrived as a form of entertainment, but they can also stem from serious mathematical or logistical problems — in such cases, their successful resolution can be a significant contribution to mathematical research. Solutions to puzzles may require recognizing patterns and creating a particular order. People with a high inductive reasoning aptitude may be better at solving these puzzles than others. Puzzles based on the process of inquiry and discovery to complete may be solved faster by those with good deduction skills. HistoryThe first jigsaw puzzle was made around 1760, when John Spilsbury, a British engraver and mapmaker, mounted a map on a sheet of wood that he then sawed around each individual country. Spilsbury used the product to aid in teaching geography. After catching on with the wider public, this remained the primary use of jigsaw puzzles until about 1820. By the early 20th century, magazines and newspapers found that they could increase their daily subscriptions by publishing puzzle contests. A puzzle undone, which forms a cube. GNU Free Documentation License How do you keep your cats off your puzzles in progress? Q. My daughter and I have a table in the living room where we like to keep out, with our puzzles that we are working on. We dont like putting them away everytime, because its much more inviting to work on if its already out and easily accessable. Our cats love to jump on the table and knock out pieces onto the floor and just destroy our progress. Does anyone know if there are anything like "puzzles protectors" out there that I can make or buy...like a cover of some sort? A towel or sheet doesnt work. That's a tough one, and I don't have an answer. Suppose you started filling in the grid by starting in the upper left hand corner, proceeding across the first row, then going left to right for the second row, then the third row, and so on. There would be 9! possibilities for the first row. There would be only one possibility for the whole last row. There would be at most 2 possibilities each for each entry in the second to last row. There would be at most 6 possibilities each for ANY entry after the first row (think about it). There would be at most 3 possibilities each for any entry in the 3rd or 6th rows. There would be only one possibility each for the entries in the rightmost column, at most 2 possibilities each for the entries in… [cont.] Answered by Curt Monash - Thu Nov 29 19:01:23 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "puzzles" Ahoy, adventure fans!
