Port Isabel is a city in Cameron County, Texas, United States. It is part of the Brownsville–Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,865 at the 2000 census. The town's name is also attached to the Port Isabel Detention Center located in nearby Los Fresnos. HistoryPort Isabel is one of the oldest continually inhabited areas founded by Europeans in North America as it was settled in 1554. In September 1967, Hurricane Beulah caused extensive damage to much of the city of Port Isabel. On 23 July 2008, Hurricane Dolly, a category 2 storm, also caused extensive damage to the city. GeographyPort Isabel is located at 26°4'25" North, 97°12'48" West (26.073675, -97.213234). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.9 square miles (7.5 km²), of which, 2.2 square miles (5.7 km²) of it is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²) of it is water.
