A police service is a public force empowered to enforce the law and to ensure public and social order through the legitimized use of force.

The term is most commonly associated with police services of a state that are authorized to exercise the police power of that state within a defined legal or territorial area of responsibility. The word comes via French Policier from the Latin politia ("civil administration"), which itself derives from the ancient Greek πόλις ("city").

Whats the difference between community police officers and proper police officers?
Q. why arent they called police officers?do they get paid, are they police officers in training?why diddent they go for a job of a police officer i want like a good description no links please.

A. Community Officers are NOT certified law enforcement officers and do not receive the intense training and ongoing training that certified officers must complete. Police Officers receive their certification via the individual state's Law Enforcement Certification authority/agency. Community Officers are also UNARMED. important: Community Officers should NOT be confused with Community POLICE Officers as described by the Department of Justice and various state and local agencies. Community Officers and Community Police Officers are two completely separate entities in that Community Police Officers are certified law enforcement officers and Community Officers are not. Community Officers are there to support the certified police officers… [cont.]

How do you become a administrative police officer?
Q. Rather than being a police officer who patrols, can you simply be a police officer that stays inside the police depart who works in the offices and doesn't have to be assigned on patrol?

A. Every police officer starts on patrol. Most departments have civilian admins, but injured officers and officers under investigation (e.g. officer involved shooting) are often given admin duties. Some departments may have some sort of uniformed admin position, but that's not as common as you think, and you'd have to do a few years on patrol before being transferred to any other unit. If you ask me, there's no reason to be a cop if you just want to sit behind a desk. Sounds like you're afraid of getting hurt, but still want the badge and the gun. That points toward some personality issues.

How does your states police academy work?
Q. In Kentucky everyone goes through the same 18 week police academy. That is except for Lexington, Louisville and the state police. I was wondering if it was like this in other states. I heard from someone that there are some departments in some states don't require their officers to go to an academy.

A. Here in Texas if you want to be a State Trooper you go to their academy in Austin, but there are many small city Police Departments and Sheriff's Offices that train their own new officers.
