In mathematics, operator is a term applied to some types of functions. Often, an "operator" is a function which acts on functions to produce other functions (the sense in which Oliver Heaviside used the term); or it may be a generalization of such a function, as in linear algebra, where some of the terminology reflects the origin of the subject in operations on the functions which are solutions of differential equations. An operator can perform a function on any number of operands (inputs) though most often there is only one operand.

An operator might also be called an operation, but the point of view is different. For instance, one can say "the operation of addition" (but not the "operator of addition") when focusing on the operands and result. One says "addition operator" when focusing on the process of addition, or from the more abstract viewpoint, the function +: S×SS.

Notation

An operator name or operator symbol is a notation which denotes a particular operator. When there is no danger of confusion, an operator name or operator symbol may be referred to more briefly as an "operator". Strictly speaking, however, the operator is a mathematical object and not the syntactic entity which denotes it. The reason for identifying it with its notation is that there are some operators which have come to have standard notations.

Unicode reserves U+2200 to U+22FF for basic "Mathematical Operators," almost all of which is defined in version 1.0 (and thus can be displayed by most internet browsers released since October 1991)

What does the operator say when you call a T-mobile cellular phone number that has been disconnected?
Q. I've been trying to call my bf's cellphone in NJ but the operator keeps on saying, "The number you dialed is not yet in service. Please check the number." Does this mean that the phone was cut? Or it's just in a dead spot?
Asked by mc_vo2 - Sat Jun 10 09:14:19 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Usually if the number was active than was cancelled it will say something like the number you are trying to reach is no longer in service. If it is saying that is it NOT YET in service, that is another problem that is coming from the network and he needs to call 18009378997. That is the toll free number to cust service for T-mob and have them check the "Star code". Listen to the message again and it will give you a number at the end. It will be something like NJ 06 72... or something like that. That will tell the Cust Care what to look for with his area and how to fix it.

How to call the operator from a Greek payphone?
Q. What I need to do is find out the number for a specific payphone here in Thasos, Greece, while I'm on vacation, so I can receive some calls at it (if possible). There's no phone number displayed on it, and I can't figure out how to call the operator to ask what its number is (dialing 0 doesn't do anything). Any help is much appreciated. Thanks! (Eucharisto!) Thank you Cort--I tried that but it says "unknown number," unfortunately.

How much money can I make as an truck driver owner-operator?
Q. I am thinking about a career change. I have heard widely varying numbers as to the money that can be made as a truck driver, if you are an owner-operator. Can anyone give me a real idea? Thanks
Asked by xyz999_1999 - Mon Apr 2 22:43:47 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Being an owner-operator is not as lucrative these days as it was years ago. The rising cost of fuel and repairs takes a big bite. Besides, the truck needs to be running 24/7 to turn a profit. If you break down, you are not earnig a dime and you are spending money. Try running as a company driver first before you even think about buying your own truck. There are even many truck companies that won't sell to new drivers as it is a risky venture.
