A nation is a body of people who share a real or imagined common history, culture, language or ethnic origin, who typically inhabit a particular country or territory. The development and conceptualization of the nation is closely related to the development of modern industrial states and nationalist movements in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, although nationalists would trace nations into the past along an uninterrupted lines of historical narrative.

Benedict Anderson argued that nations were "imagined communities" because "the members of even the smallest nation will never know most of their fellow-members, meet them, or even hear of them, yet in the minds of each lives the image of their communion", and traced their origins back to vernacular print journalism, which by its very nature was limited with linguistic zones and addressed a common audience.

Though "nation" is also commonly used in informal discourse as a synonym for state or country, a nation is not identical to a state. Countries where the social concept of "nation" coincides with the political concept of "state" are called nation states.

Suppose all the most developed nations found a way to meet the goals of Kyoto?
Q. Let's talk about solutions now. The basic goal of Kyoto is to require the most-developed nations to reduce CO2 emissions by 5.2 percent levels by around 2010. This target year is almost upon us and realistically, the Kyoto goals will not be met. However, let's say a new treaty is signed by these nations and they find some way to meet the goals of the treaty? What would be the tangible positive results that would make it worthwhile for all these countries to comply, when trying to prevent global warming would mean considerable economic hardship for them and much harm for the developing countries? This is where the rubber meets the road. This is the practical side of this issue. Proponents of man made global warming, this is your… [cont.]

A. 1) Supposing all of these countries found some way, as you ask, with considerable economic hardship, to meet the goals of Kyoto by 2012 (as you mention, it will not happen by 2010 or 2012) a new treaty, the science (numbers from the models, admittedly) indicates that the net impact on global temperatures over the next 100 years would be at most an almost undetectable 0.2 F degrees. Global temperatures can change that much from month to month. The first question in light of these numbers is: Will democratically accountable governments truly subject their constituents to economic pain for a result that is this minuscule? This would be, in anybody s view, an untenable move scientifically, economically and also politically. The second… [cont.]

What is the usual punishment for draft dodging in nations currently having a draft?
Q. Of course that's many nations and punishment will vary. In Germany males must serve at least 9 months, but how bad is it when they refuse? Unwilling draftees will represent low morale so they can't be wanted that badly. Is it serious or not?

Q. Why did the League of Nations fail to prevent the outbreak of the Second World War?

A. Like the U.N. of today, they were powerless. They fought over what shape of table to use. Who should sit where. What language to use. They were useless. They accomplished absolutely nothing.

Nations is often used synonymously with ethnic group (sometimes "ethnos"), but although ethnicity is now one of the most important aspects of cultural or social identity for the members of most nations, people with the same ethnic origin may live in different nation-states and be treated as members of separate nations for that reason.

  • "Nations, like men, have their infancy."
  • "A nation is a society united by a delusion about its ancestory and by a common hatred of its neighbors."
  • "The great nations have always acted like gangsters, and the small nations like prostitutes."
  • "No man has a right to fix the boundary of the march of a nation; no man has a right to say to his country - thus far shalt thou go and no further."
  • "No nation is fit to sit in judgement upon any other nation."
