Is encouraging youths to seek alternatives to the Military a good project to start?
Q. Such as I will join a group that offers alternatives to the military, I may branch off and do my own thing. I want to enourage 10,000 youths to seek an alternative to the Military, then my mission is complete. Ultimately, the Military will improve, and people will be generally less unhappy. Honestly the military is not a jobs program and doesn't help people get a job after a 4 to 6 years enlistment. It gives general work experiance, but that is about it. The qualifications do not necessarly translate well or cross over into the civilian sector in mot cases. The GI Bill isn't what it is cracked-up to be, neither is T.A. Recruiters LIE, someone needs to save these people from these predators.

A. The whole military system is a joke Nothing against the soldiers but your not well paid and you don't really get allot out of joining but your expected to PAY the ultimate price die for what a small portion of the government believes is the right thing to do...they prey on the misfortune of the countries poor and misguided by making false promises and not coming through on many ... How many wounded soldiers would you say now have a better life because of the gov? How about the ones who died? Or their families?? That being said I believe ANY person serving in our military who is wounded, hurt or killed in service including mental problems that are caused from seeing and doing many things they do should be taken care of for the rest… [cont.]

How do I get started in a career in counseling the military? And do I have to be in the Military to do this?
Q. I am currently a undergraduate student. I'm very interested in becoming a counselor, therapist or social worker for the military, especially for all the troops coming back home, burdened with the stress and trauma of war. I googled it and I can only seem to find lists of careers in the military (i.e. www.careersinthemilitary. com) but not information about how to go about becoming a therapist or counselor for the miltary. More importantly, I am not in the military and I am wondering if I have to be to be a counselor?

A. You didn't say what country you are in but I'll assume the US. Nearly any job you can think of is available to you in the military. The cool part is they will training and if you can avoid combat, you can get paid to do what you love. I don't know all the current details of military recruitment so you'll need to talk to a recruiter. I can't emphasis this enough, don't believe what they say until you see the enlistment contract you'll be signing. 99% of recruiters are honest but a few will promise anything. I would also insist on speaking with someone in the military who is doing the career you want to pursue. Mike Honeycutt

  • "In the various states of society, armies are recruited from very different motives. Barbarians are urged by the love of war; the citizens of a free republic may be prompted by a principle of duty; the subjects, or at least the nobles, of a monarchy, are animated by a sentiment of honor; but the timid and luxurious inhabitants of a declining empire must be allured into the service by the hopes of profit, or compelled by the dread of punishment".
  • "What the main drift of the twentieth century has revealed is that the economy has become concentrated and incorporated in the great hierarchies, the military has become enlarged and decisive to the shape of the entire economic structure; and moreover the economic and the military have become structurally and deeply interrelated, as the economy has become a seemingly permanent war economy; and military men and policies have increasingly penetrated the corporate economy".
