Answered by Mr Mills - Thu Oct 19 20:24:33 2006 Could a floating island in the middle of the ocean have any legal status?
Q. What if, in the middle of the Atlantic, beyond any state's waters, there was a floating island of considerable size (say 50 square miles)? It had a large population and a stable legal structure. Could that floating island be considered a country? If it is not considered a country, does it still have to be under the authority of another state or would everyone just leave it alone? Any information beyond what I asked for would be helpful. I am well aware of "micronations" like Sealand, but those entities are not considered independent countries. I have also looked into the Treaty of the Seas convention about the legal status of artificial islands, which you might want to take into consideration.
