Malignancy (from the Latin roots mal- = "bad" and -genus = "born") is the tendency of a medical condition, especially tumors to become progressively worse and to potentially result in death. It is characterized by the properties of anaplasia, invasiveness, and metastasis. Malignant is a corresponding adjectival medical term used to describe a severe and progressively worsening disease. The term is most familiar as a description of cancer. A malignant tumor may be contrasted with a non-cancerous benign tumor in that a malignancy is not self-limited in its growth, is capable of invading into adjacent tissues, and may be capable of spreading to distant tissues (metastasizing), while a benign tumor has none of those properties. Malignant tumor is synonymous with cancer. Uses of "malignant" in oncology:

It wanders still further to President Zardari using the metaphor of cancer to describe the Talibanisation of Pakistan. Isn't that when healthy cells turn malignant and rapidly multiply? And I thought we said we knew what the enemy looks like.

How does a benign tumor differ from a malignant tumor?
Q. I know that benign isn't cancerous and malignant is... but I want to know, if there a difference in growth, feeling, look??? I have a tumor on my lip and a lump on my cervix... I'm so worry, I am having the one on my lip removed next month, but before then, is there any way to tell the difference?? Please, I'm only 18 & so worried!

A. When they remove the tumour they will do a biopsy which means they will examine the tumour for cancer cells. That is the only way to tell if it is cancerous. Having said that I would say that if your doctor really thought that you had cancer he would not be waiting a month to do the surgery. You would be on a emergency list to have it done now. I had a friend who is much older than you and she found a lump on her breast She called her doctor and he saw her that day. He was sure it was cancer. She saw the surgeon the next day and had the biopsy and the day after that her breast was removed. I was away for a long weekend and came back to this. It was done on Friday Saturday and Sunday. Imagine how shocked I was when I called her on Monday… [cont.]

Is it possible for a Kidney Stone to be Malignant?
Q. In the past 2 years, my girlfriend has had kidney stones 3 times. Once she passed it, and twice they went in and busted them. After the last one, they sent a sample to the lab (common procedure, I'm guessing?) and something came back malignant. They said they're thinking it's just a fluke but they want to draw blood and double check everything. So my question is, is it really possible for a kidney stone to be malignant?

A. When "malignant" is used to describe a kidney stone, it means the stone has calcified and is not readily soluble, and it would cause problems if untreated. This is different from the meaning when the word is used to describe cancer.
