In statistics, the likelihood function (often simply the likelihood) is a function of the parameters of a statistical model that plays a key role in statistical inference. In non-technical usage, "likelihood" is a synonym for "probability", but throughout this article only the technical definition is used. Informally, if "probability" allows us to predict unknown outcomes based on known parameters, then "likelihood" allows us to estimate unknown parameters based on known outcomes.

In a sense, likelihood works backwards from conditional probability. Forward reasoning: given parameter B, use the conditional probability P(A|B) to reason about outcome A. This is formalized in Bayes' theorem:

Backward reasoning: given outcome A, use the likelihood function L(B|A) to reason about parameter B. Formally, a likelihood function is a conditional probability function considered as a function of its second argument, with its first argument held fixed:

and also any other function proportional to such a function. That is, the likelihood function for B is the equivalence class of functions

for any constant of proportionality α > 0. The numerical value L(b | A) alone is immaterial; all that matters are likelihood ratios of the form

which are invariant with respect to the constant of proportionality α.

A. W. F. Edwards defined support as the natural logarithm of the likelihood ratio, and the support function as the natural logarithm of the likelihood function. There is potential for confusion with the mathematical meaning of 'support', however, and this terminology is not widely used outside Edwards' main applied field of phylogenetics.

For more about making inferences via likelihood functions, see also the method of maximum likelihood, and likelihood-ratio testing.

What is the likelihood of contracting Lyme disease from a tick bite?
Q. I have read from various sources that this is between 1 and 5%, or 1.2% to 1.4%, but can anybody provide a link to a study or other data that can confirm this? I live in Potomac, which is in Montgomery County, MD. I live in Potomac, which is in Montgomery County, MD.

A. Depends on whether the tick is infected with Lyme or not. If an infected tick bites you, you have a high chance of having the disease transmitted to you--and the longer the tick is attached, the greater the chance of it. If the tick isn't infected, you have zero chance of getting Lyme from that tick bite. Some areas of the US have higher tick infection rates than others. But the infection rates for a certain area are not static. They rise and fall with a variety of different factors. In general, the tick infection rates are highest in certain parts of the east coast, and parts of California. But Lyme-carrying ticks have been found in every state. Even if you're in an area with a low over-all rate, if the tick that bites you is infected,… [cont.]

What is the likelihood of catching disease from prison environment?
Q. Hello. I am 7 months pregnant & as part of my job, I may be tasked to conduct some interviews of inmates at a prison facility. By going to the prison & conducting the interviews, is it possible or likely that I can catch something even if I am extremely careful to not put my hands in my mouth, etc & I clean up very good afterwards? Please give me some advice & what would you do in my situation. Thank you

A. At 7 months pregnant you are vulnerable to anything and everything !! Prisons ,like hospitals or any institution are the dirtiest and most disease prone places on earth!! besides sanitation ,communicability and mobility (new inmates comming in every day) their watchfulness and treatment of existing diseases are virtually non-existent!!! i am surprised that your superior is so thoughtless to put you in such a vulnerable position!!! AND , if he puts you in that type of situation so is he doing likewise to your unborn!!!
