Investment or investing is a term with several closely-related meanings in business management, finance and economics, related to saving or deferring consumption. Investing is the active redirection of resources: from being consumed today, to creating benefits in the future; the use of assets to earn income or profit. An investment is a choice by an individual or an organization such as a pension fund, after at least some careful analysis or thought, to place or lend money in a vehicle (e.g. property, stock securities, bonds) that has sufficiently low risk and provides the possibility of generating returns over a period of time. Placing or lending money in a vehicle that risks the loss of the principal sum or that has not been thoroughly analyzed is by definition speculation and not investment at all.

In the case of investment, rather than store the good produced or its money equivalent, the investor chooses to use that good either to create a durable consumer or producer good, or to lend the original saved good to another in exchange for either interest or a share of the profits. In the first case, the individual creates durable consumer goods, hoping the services from the good will make his life better. In the second, the individual becomes an entrepreneur using the resource to produce goods and services for others in the hope of a profitable sale. The third case describes a lender, and the fourth describes an investor in a share of the business. In each case, the consumer obtains a durable asset or investment, and accounts for that asset by recording an equivalent liability. As time passes, and both prices and interest rates change, the value of the asset and liability also change.

An asset is usually purchased, or equivalently a deposit is made in a bank, in hopes of getting a future return or interest from it. The word originates in the Latin "vestis", meaning garment, and refers to the act of putting things (money or other claims to resources) into others' pockets. See Invest. The basic meaning of the term being an asset held to have some recurring or capital gains. It is an asset that is expected to give returns without any work on the asset per se. The term "investment" is used differently in economics and in finance. Economists refer to a real investment (such as a machine or a house), while financial economists refer to a financial asset, such as money that is put into a bank or the market, which may then be used to buy a real asset.

How do I deduct investment advisory fees paid for professional investment services on my 2008 federal taxes?
Q. What form do I use? Is there a limit to the fees (I payed about $8K for investment fees)? Do the fees get bundled into other "deductoins" so that I have to meet a threshold of expenses? Thanks all!

A. Investment fees are a miscellaneous itemized deduction subject to the 2% AGI limit. Claim them on Schedule A.

What is the return on investment of a check cashing franchise?
Q. I am working with a franchise consultant who is recommending that I purchase a check cashing franchise with a company called Family Financial Centers. I have never owned a franchise before. I would like to find out from current franchisees of this or other companies how much investment of their personal time is necessary and what kind of net profit are you making per year. Family Financial Centers is a new business (3 years) so I'm concerned that there is no long term track record of it's profitability.

How does running a property investment business work?
Q. How does running a property investment business work. Do you start off buying a few properties and rent them out. Do you start by paying them off with a mortgage, so you can buy several properties at a time and pay each property off in certain amounts each time. Do you normally set up up a company.

  • The line separating investment and speculation, which is never bright and clear, becomes blurred still further when most market participants have recently enjoyed triumphs. Nothing sedates rationality like large doses of effortless money. After a heady experience of that kind, normally sensible people drift into behavior akin to that of Cinderella at the ball. They know that overstaying the festivities — that is, continuing to speculate in companies that have gigantic valuations relative to the cash they are likely to generate in the future will eventually bring on pumpkins and mice. But they nevertheless hate to miss a single minute of what is one helluva party. Therefore, the giddy participants all plan to leave just seconds before midnight. There's a problem, though: They are dancing in a room in which the clocks have no hands.
