How early can an infant begin swimming lessons?
Q. Hi Moms My daughter is 4 months old right now. I am hoping to put her in swimming lessons this summer when she will be 6-7 months. I was wondering if thats too young for an infant to begin swimming? Aside from the swimming itself, what about the pool being a source of infections? Thanks!

A. I had my first daughter in "lessons" at 6 months and it was a waste of money. Basically these "lessons" are just to get the baby comfortable with the water. Even though the water was fairly warm, her lips were always blue by the time the lesson was over. I think you could do the same with your baby without PAYING for lessons. You take your baby in the water with you and sing songs, dance around, let her splash. You don't really need a swim teacher showing you how to do that. Hopefully the pool you are in uses the necessary amount of chlorine to rid potential harmful bacteria. I think you daughter is safe in that respect but just don't let her drink the water!

What can happen to an infant if the Moro (startle) reflex is overstimulated?
Q. If an infant is startled too much or is scared too much, what can happen? I have seen old film of people tossing their babies into the air and catching them; can this overstimulate the Moro, or startle reflex? What, if any bad effects can this have on an infant? Is overstimulation of the Moro reflex dangerous?

A. The Moro reflex is outgrown before people start tossing babies in the air. It is outgrown around 4 months. Anyone tossing a newborn around is risking their child's life. Tossing an older baby and causing fear instead of joy is wrong. Babies usually have no fear of their parents. So a parent teaching a baby fear will undermine the babies trust of their parents.

A. My girls were always very happy if I just carried them around and talked to them about whatever I was doing. We went on walks, trips to the mall and grocery store, and just moved around the house cleaning and doing laundry. My younger daughter loved being carried in a sling, and I wish I'd had one when my older daughter was a baby. My older daughter did like the stroller a lot, though. My older daughter loved her bouncy seat, and when she was 4 months old, I started putting her in her exersaucer, which was her very favorite toy. She also loved listening to books. I could hold her on my lap and read to her for a very long time. My younger daughter loved the swing. She also loved just being on the floor in the middle of the room and… [cont.]
