From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A gear is a component within a transmission device that transmits rotational torque by applying a force to the teeth of another gear or device. A gear is different from a pulley in that a gear is a round wheel that has linkages ("teeth" or "cogs") that mesh with other gear teeth, allowing force to be fully transferred without slippage. Depending on their construction and arrangement, geared devices can transmit forces at different speeds, torques, or in a different direction, from the power source. The most common situation is for a gear to mesh with another gear, but a gear can mesh with any device having compatible teeth, such as linear moving racks. The gear's most important feature is that gears of unequal sizes (diameters) can be combined to produce a mechanical advantage, so that the rotational speed and torque of the second gear are different from those of the first. In the context of a particular machine, the term "gear" also refers to one particular arrangement of gears among other arrangements (such as "first gear"). Such arrangements are often given as a ratio, using the number of teeth or gear diameter as units. The term "gear" is also used in non-geared devices that perform equivalent tasks:
The earliest known reference to a gear was around 50 A.D. by Hero of Alexandria, though the Book of Song suggests that the South Pointing Chariot may have employed differential gears as early as the Zhou Dynasty (1045-256 BC) of China. The Unicode gear "⚙" is found at u+2699. From Wikipedia under the

I started taking fencing lessons in the USA, but my coach fenced in France and knows a good place to get gear there. I will be in England and Paris over the summer, and want to get gear there- fencing mask, plastron, jacket, pants, and epee. However, I know that you have to somehow deal with customs when bringing things purchased in one country into another. What exactly is involved, will there be any trouble? Thank you! Asked by Jessica K - Sat Apr 11 21:18:57 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. You should be able to transport these items as checked baggage. Just declare them on the Customs form you'll fill out on the way back. Be prepared to pay whatever duties may be applicable. Alternately, you may be able to have them shipped via UPS or FedEx. Answered by RDG78 - Sat Apr 11 21:27:34 2009 Do you save more gas in a higher gear or a lower gear? Q. I always hear talk about people with manual transmissions save more gas than people with automatic cars. I have the old school manual. Not this new stuff where there is no clutch. I have a clutch on mine the old school stick shift. Anyway, I've been trying to save gas. Do I burn more gas in a higher gear or a lower gear. Where should I keep the RPM's when I'm driving in the higher or lower gear at that as well? Example. It redlines at 9000 RPMS. I'm trying to save gas. Should I have it halfway driving in that particular gear, and should I be driving in a high or low gear so I don't burn as much gas? Asked by God'sStrength - Tue Sep 25 14:09:27 2007 - - 17 Answers - 0 Comments A. HIgher, lower gears use more RPM's making the engine work harder. Q. I'm a member of the Salesianum swim team. We're the best team in DE. My goal this year is to get my 50 free time under 30. Please suggest some good gear. Don't recommend any suits because I have to wear the team suit. Asked by WiiMan - Sun Dec 24 14:30:14 2006 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hi. We are the best tem in OH. haha. Actually, 4th, but who's counting. At the beginning of the season, our coach makes us buy a few things. Kickboards, paddles, and fins, and a bag to put them in. The kickboard, for obvious reasons. The paddles, for shoulder strength. They really help. They go on your hands and you swim (or pull with a poolboy). They add resistance to your arms and build up strength specific to your stroke style. Like, my shoulders do not do a lot of the work in my stroke, just my muscles. I use the paddles for 10 x 200 pull and the next day, I cant move my shoulders bc it worked them so much. Fins, for your kick. You dont use them with a kickboard though. You go one length of the pool underwater and with the fins,… [cont.] Answered by Kendall M - Sun Dec 24 16:57:17 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "gear" |
