What are the best fish for a 10 gallon tank?
Q. Getting a 10 gallon tank. I've never had fish before, besides some goldfish in a small tank so I'm wondering what are the best types to start out with in this size of tank. Not planning to get a larger tank. Also, I'd like a alge eater to help keep the tank cleaner, is a 10 gallon too small for one? Also, does anyone have a good website that explains and answers basic questions about fish and tanks since I am new to this?

A. As for the algae eater, it depends upon the species. the most commonly sold algae eater, the Pleco can actually get rather large. fish you may consider keeping in your 10 gallon are: algae eaters/ bottom feeders chinese or siamese algae eater khulii loach (or relative) clown pleco (don't grow too big) cory cats other fish (these are compatible) dwarf/ honey/ blue/ pearl gouramies any barbs danios most tetras cichlids only kept with other cichlids I have a 10 gallon planted aquarium in which currently thrive 2 pearl gouramies, 1 anglefish, 3 neon tetras, 2 platties, 1 khulii loach, 1 chinese algae eater, and plenty of snails. there are also shrimp and crabs. What kind of 5 gallon fish tank should I get for 2 betta fish?
Q. I have two betta fish, one male and one female, separated by a divider. I recently realized that a one gallon tank is WAY too small for two betta fish. I'm looking for a tank with a heater, filter and the divider included for a reasonable price. I realize that 5 gallon tank is still pretty small but I just don't have the room for a 10-gallon. Please leave any brand or suggestions for a tank.

A. I have an Eclipse Hex 5 aquarium, its worked really well and looks great while not taking up too much room. It has a built in filter with cartridges you should replace once every month or two (but with just 2 fishes in there, you could probably get away with replacing it even less often). You can probably fit a divider in there pretty well too, but i don't think any tank comes with a divider or heater included.

How do I prevent my 20 gallon tank from getting algae?
Q. I have a 20 gallon tank with 7 Sword tails (fish) inside. I just cleaned the whole tank 3 days ago and the water is already getting cloudy and I am starting to see more algae. Before I cleaned my tank, the tank was so cloudy and filled with algae that many of my fish died. How can I prevent my 20 gallon tank from getting algae?
Asked by XXranger53 - Fri Aug 22 21:01:38 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You are probably over feeding. Do not feed more than your fish will eat in 3 -5 minutes and no more than twice a day. Keep the lights on for no more than 8 to 10 hours a day. I use Red Ramshorn snails to control algae. They eat most alga's but do not eat or hurt the plants in a tank. Stay away from "Chinese" or "Asian" algae eaters. They do the job alright in the beginning but they grow up to become nasty killers that are nearly impossible to catch. They just about wiped out my whole community tank. Also, check your phosphate levels with a test kit. Algae do very well in high phosphate levels.

A. I would stick to just small fish, I have a 40 gallon tank and have a Regal Tang in it and while it is small it is OK but I will have to move it to the larger tank when it has grown as it will be too big. They say you should have 1 inch of fish for every 6 gallons, so therefore you could have 5inch, which would only give you 2 small fish, but I think this is silly and I don't stick to this rule. In my 40 gallon I have a common clown, a regal tang, starry blenny, bi-colour bleeny. yellow clown blenny, strawberry gramma, red scooter blenny and a blue cheek goby, and they are all doing well, so you should be alright with about 6 or 7 small fish. what saltwater anemones can survive in a 30 gallon tank with halide lighting?
Q. I have 2 clown fish in a 30 gallon tank. I want to get them an anemone but i dont know what kind can survive in a 30 gallon tank. I will be getting a halide light fixture.
Asked by crey337337 - Sun Nov 25 01:28:34 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It really depends on the type of clowns you have. If you have Tomato or Clarkii Clownfish, you could keep a Bubble Tip or Long Tentacle Anemone in there with no problems. Bubble Tips are generally the most hardy, and they don't get as large as other anemones. An Ocellaris or Percula won't host these smaller anemones naturally, so they will probably just ignore them. They host anemones that are much too large for a 30 gallon aquarium. Just watch your water temperature and evaporation with the halide over the 30 gallon. Check out the link in the sources section for a good read on anemones. Cheers

A. Here is a copy of my care sheet. Never use pebbles, sand or other loose substrates. Never use heat rocks. The simpler the decorations, the easier it will be to keep clean. Bearded Dragons Beardies should have at least a 40 gallon breeder tank. Breeder tanks are wider rather than being tall. This allows for more floor space. The larger the tank, the better for your beardie. Mine is in a 75 gallon. Do not use sand or other loose substrate on the bottom of the tank. The risk of intestinal impaction is very real and very common. Also, loose substrate allows for the quick growth of bacteria and harbors parasites. It is difficult to clean well and usually smells before long. Good choices for substrate are non-adhesive shelf… [cont.]

How many fish can i keep in a 10 gallon tank?
Q. I already have three platies, and two very small feeder guppies. I also have a filter for a twenty gallon tank, so does than mean that I can have more fish than you normally would for a ten gallon tank? I really want to add one or two Kissing Gourami, should I?
Asked by :D - Fri May 11 14:55:17 2007 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments
A. That depends on the size of the fish and the type.Having a twenty gallon filter doesn't mean that you should have more fish in the tank but if all the fish you bought are not agressive and small like the guppies or a little bit bigger then you could add two gouramis. Just make sure that you are feeding them the right type of food and that they all have the same temperature tolerance. I recommend getting a heater for your aquarium to adjust the temperature to the right extent for your fish. You're gonna need it come winter time.

How should i decorate my 6 gallon tank so that it really brings out my indian dwarf puffer?
Q. Since the dwarf puffer is so small i thought i would be hard to see it in a 6 gallon tank. Im thinking black sand with a black background. Do you think this would work to help bring it out? Also, maybe 1 or 2 artificial plants and a small cave? What do you think? Any other suggestions?
Asked by here_4_1_day - Tue Oct 14 20:27:41 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well, when keeping puffers especially you need LOTS of hiding spots. They are very smart critter's and need something to interest them and explore. Also, the more hiding spots you have, the more comfortable the puffer will be and the more often he will be out and about in his tank so you can see him!

Is a one gallon tank good for a mouse or two?
Q. Can I keep a mouse in a 1 gallon tank? I heard they are social creatures though, so would that be okay for two also? How many iches of room per mouse?
Asked by dorkiii - Mon Jul 9 16:16:04 2007 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Tanks can be used for mice, because they protect from drafts and cage bar space is often too wide...allowing for escapes and unwanted visitors. They will only become soiled if you're not cleaning them out often enough or improperly. The temperature and humidity also play a part, but if kept at ideal levels, you won't have any problem. Here is a cage/tank calculator:

Q. What kind of fish can i keep in a 10 gallon tank? Are they're any kinds of freshwater "suckers" or freshwater catfish that can be kept in a 10 gallon tank? Also, how hard is it to take care of a fish and what all do i need to keep my fish alive and healthy in the tank? Also, about how much would the fish cost? I'm sorry so many questions. A. Think small fish. Goldfish will outgrow a 10gal, as will Dojo Loaches. Best catfish option for a 10 gal is a few small cory catfish. There are various species, and some only grow to 1" long. Then you could keep a dwarf gourami, a betta, or a school of small fish like Neons, White Cloud Minnows or other small schooling fish. A 10 gal tank does limit what you can keep, but there are plenty of good (small) options that will work. Have read of some good fishkeeping web sites like and you will learn a lot. The trick to successfull fish keeping is setting up a stable environment in the aquarium. Look after the tank and water, and the fish will take care of themselves. Try and care for the fish like you do a hamster or a kitten - fail… [cont.]

But, I've never owned a fish until now.

How can i sell my 30 Gallon Fish Tank on Craigslists?
Q. I have been reposting it because of fake buyers. They said on email that they are interested and after i reply i never hear from them again. I have been trying to sell a 30 gallon tank including lid, hood, lights (blue), air pump, air bubbler, heater, gravel, wallpaper, and filter. Everything is still in good condition. All for only $55 or best offer. I have been trying to sell it for almost 2 months now. How can i ensure people to buy it?

A. I've found the best way to sell on craigslist is to specify certain conditions. Cash only, first come, first served. Will not hold. Must pick up. That sort of thing. You don't happen to live in central florida do ya? I'd take it off your hands.

What are good aquarium plants for a five gallon tank?
Q. I have a five gallon fish tank in my dorm room at school and want to put real plants in it. I am looking for some that are low-maintenance, grow well, and won't harm my fish or rot in the tank. There is a 15W bulb in the tank hood that I have on during the day.

A. Java Fern, Java Moss, and Anubias species are usually the best plants for beginners. How much lighting do you have? EDIT: With 15 watts over a 5 gallon tank, you can have any plants on this list in your tank: And possibly some on this list:
