Where can you buy exotic saltwater fish / pets? I would like a stingray and a leopard shark...?
Q. Where can you buy exotic saltwater fish / pets? I would like a stingray and a leopard shark... Question Details: I'm not sure where to purchase these. Obviously, local aquarium stores tend to have: yellow tang, dog faced puffer, boxfish, camel shrimp , etc. I never see sharks or stingrays. Does anyone have sharks or stingrays? Tommy Lee (Motley Crue drummer) routinely keeps stingrays and leopard sharks as pets. Therefore, it is possible to obtain these animals for your aquarium. My fifth grade science teacher also kept an actual shark in an aquarium in the classroom for the students to enjoy and care for. Does anyone currently own any sharks or stingrays or know where to purchase them?

Q. I am relatively experienced with freshwater tanks (have a 30 gal. goldfish tank, 3 fish in it, and a betta/frog tank. I understand there is a bit more to a saltwater tank, please share your advice / experiences!

A. I kept freshwater for 20 years before I decided to do saltwater. Everything I read beforehand said to start with a tank at least 30 gallons (I picked a 29 gallon I had but wasn't using). Withing 6 months, I was ready to move up to a 55 gallon, and kept the 29 gallon as a saltwater tank as well. I'm now up to three saltwater. It's addictive! Once you get the tank set up (the biggest time and money consumer), there really isn't that much difference or work to them. At least that's my opinion, and I still have both types. There's a little more to the equipment, such as a protein skimmer (used to remove dissolved organics and small particulates from the water that would otherwise add to the nutrient load), a hydrometer (used to mix the… [cont.]

A. Got to agree with the prior two answers this is a HUGE investment and buy a good book. Theres a ton of misinformation out there. Dont automaticly trust the fish stores youll get screwed more then you wont. They want to make a sale most of the time and dont think twice about how it affects you. Also when saying your gonna start a reef aquarium remember that the reef needs live rock. Live rock costs about 4-5 bucks a pound when you buy in bulk and on hand sized piece usually weighs 1-2 pounds. To fill my 75 gallon it would cost a ton much less a 220. Also eels are one of my favorite but when it comes to putting them in a reef they are blind and thus clumsy. Chances are theyll accidently displace a lot of your coral. The lionfish… [cont.]

If I wanted to have my very1st aquarium what should I start w/? PS- I don't care for gold fish.?
Q. Honestly, I wanted a Sun Conure parrot, but i have to agree w/ the comments from the bird people in the other category, my schedule really does not allow me to be selfish in leaving a pet alone for so long while i work. I enjoy fish also they are very calming & entertaining. But, I would like something more colorful & exotic then just a goldfish. I am more than willing to put in the time so the tank & it's occupants are healthy & comfortable. any suggestions on how to start. What fishes live better w/ other fishes. Are saltwater fish easier than fresh water fish to maintain? Price wise is there much of a difference? HELP!

A. well first thing you need to decide is freshwater or marine. marine has more exotic fish, but their also pricier. I think marine tanks a harder to maintain because you have the stuff you need to worry about for fresh water plus the salt and such. but it's not that much harder. after you decide that you need to decide tank size, after that I'd be glad to give you advice on what fish would be best for you :)

A. I've kept puffers and tangs and clowns, you need to be sure the clown is larger than the puffer. THere really shouldn't be a problem as long as your puffer is not LARGE. Also, how long has your tank been up and running? If it is less than 6 months, I would watch at this point getting the puffer until your tank matures a bit more. Live rocks, corals shrimp also a no no with the puffer.

I am thinking about getting a saltwaer tank?
Q. I would love to have a salt water tank, because the fish are so exotic, and such. I am getting paid today, and i have no idea how much, but at least $20. I already have $3, and my birthday is on the 28th of july, and i always get money from relatives.Anyway, I've heard that saltwater tanks are hard to have, and very expensive to keep. I really don't need a huge one, i would like one to go in our kitchen,or in our media room, which is like a bonus room. Maybe 10gallons to 20gallons is really all I need. My dad let's me get all the fish i want, because when i get fish, it takes my mind off of begging him for a cat or dog, lol. I want about 6 or 7 fish. i was hoping to do a nemo theme. With all the fish from "finding nemo". But I will most… [cont.]

A. To keep a tank with the fish that were in the dentist's office you'd need well over 100 gallons. (Movies, although entertaining, don't reflect the realities of keeping saltwater fish). That's not to say that you can't keep some of them in a smaller tank, though. Because the fish in saltwater tanks are more sensitive to environmental changes (this includes water temperature and water chemistry) and are more territorial (will be aggressive to fish in "their space") it's best to go with the largest tank you can afford. When I was first starting, a 30 gallon was suggested as the smallest for a beginner. Since you're already thinging of a 20, I would suggest you get a 29 - it has the same base area as a 20 long, but is taller. Even this… [cont.]

Are there any places to order cheap fancy goldfish online?
Q. Besides Petco, my town only has one fish store and they specialize in saltwater fish and exotics and have a fairly limited supply of goldfish. Petco had a better variety, but it's Petco. None of them were very great. I was wondering if there are any places online to buy fancy goldfish with in a budget? I'm looking for about three. Two of them I would like to be in the 30 dollar range, and then I might buy one 'showcase' goldfish that is a little more expensive, perhaps in the 60 dollar range. Any suggestions? Otherwise, I'll just keep checking petco when they get their shipments in and hope I can manage to snag something really awesome. The price definitely is right. Thanks guys. I'll try those sites you recommended. Most of the sites I… [cont.]

A. Buying fish online is not cheap. Mostly because of shipping. liveaquaria.com and goldfishconnection.com both offer goldfish for sale though. also searching for "live goldfish" on ebay turns up results. Have you talked to your specialty store to see if they will order you some more goldfish? It couldn't hurt :) I know my LFS will do it.

Should I start a saltwater aquarium in my 30 gallon?
Q. I have a 30 gallon freshwater right now. One of my favourite fish died and now I am thinking of starting a saltwater tank. I have always loved and wanted a saltwater tank. I have just heard that they are very time-consuming and expensive. From the people who have them, is this completely true? If so, how much time and money? I love SW fish. Freshwater fish just aren't as exotic as I like. Tetras and goldfish are boring to me. I know that I can get anything from shrimp and snails to lionfish in a SW tank (not in my 30, of course). I hate to be cliche and it has nothing to do with Finding Nemo, but I love clownfish, both the orange and the black ones. I also love anemoenes [sic]. my ideal tank would be a live rock with anemoenes [sic] and… [cont.]

A. Your main expense is going to be start up not monthly maintenance. If you want to keep anemone you will need to upgrade your lighting to at least compact florescent, you will also need a protein skimmer, you can use the heater from your old tank and if you are using live rock and sand don't really need a filter if you don't' stock heavily. Live rock and live sand can be quite expensive also. 30gal is a good size for an anemone and a pair of clown fish. As far as monthly maintenance its not all that much. I typically spend less that $50 a year on additives for my 125 gal reef tank. As far as taking fish etc from the wild it is not typically a good idea as they rarely adapt well to living in a tank. You are also introducing… [cont.]

Q. (this is going to be a long one) could 8 people cared for all the animals while also sailing the ark. How would they have known the special dietary needs of some of the more exotic animals, stopped the animals from preying on each other. A. I would stick with one pair of Clownfish in a 20 gallon. You can keep multiple anemones, just be cautioned that they can attack each other. Amphiprion percula naturally host Heteractis magnifica (Ritteri Anemone) or Stichodactyla mertensii (Carpet Anemone) though. These are both difficult anemones to keep, and require much larger tanks. I would suggest a pair of Tomato Clowns (Amphiprion frenatus) and a Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor) instead. Just be sure the anemone is large enough to host two Clowns. If you didn't purchase "live" sand, it will quickly become live by providing a surface for nitrifying bacteria and beneficial micro-fauna. Regards

Looking for a new Rodent!?
Q. I have had hamsters, fish (saltwater so can take an exotic or special care animal), dog, birds, (have had is only for the hamster still have all the rest), I am going to get a Sugar Glider in March, but I want something now nothing too expensive. I was think something small easy to care for, and dosen't live too long, (that sound really mean but by that i mean like 20 years+ not like 5 or so), I really like the Black Bear Hamster, no teddy bears though, maybe a mouse not too sure, duprasi, short-tailed opossum, hedgehog, Roborovski Hamster. My question is which to get one of those or none? Recommend anything you think would be suitable for me! Thanks a lot! ~Kyle
