Q. What would you say are exotic fish for a 10 gallon tank?

A. I think Glo-Lite Tetras are neat - if you're not opposed to genetically enchanced tropical fish. The most exotic freshwater fish I've ever had is a Dwarf Puffer - unfortunately, they're really aggressive and WILL eat your other fish. Had a couple of my tetras that lost their tails/fins to the Puffer & died shortly thereafter. Tetras were supposed to be "fast enough to get away" but erghm... they weren't. You can definitely keep an interestingly beautiful 10-gallon tank by having a good variety of fish. If you get tetras, I would stick with those. Barbs do well together. There are also the spendidly energetic & beautiful Danios. Just keep your groups similar & you'll be fine. There are lots of different varieties & types of fish. Good luck! [cont.]

A. It's hard to say without knowing your constraints. In other words... ~ Are you talking about freshwater, brackish, or saltwater fish? ~ Do you already have a tank? If so, how big is it? ~ Do you already have some fish? If so, what are they? Picking cool fish is easy. Picking cool fish that can fit in a certain tank and get along with certain tankmates is the hard part. Some of my favorites that are pretty or unusual (or both): Freshwater: ~African Butterflyfish ~Black Ghost Knife Fish ~African Leopard Bush Fish (Leaf Fish) ~Guppies (this may not count as "exotic" to you, but I think they are beautiful) ~Ropefish (actually, I'm a fan of any eel-like fish. If you have the right setup you could even get a freshwater eel, but… [cont.]

A. Here are some suggestions for community aquaria of different sizes designed for aquarists of different levels of experience. 1) A novice's medium-sized tank (50 litres to 70 litres) housing a mixed community of hardy, inexpensive, active, medium-sized fishes: One male and two female swordtails. Two schools of six to ten fish each, chosen from: giant danios; rosy barbs; gold barbs; cherry barbs; Boeseman's rainbowfish; or red rainbowfish. Six Corydoras. One Ancistrus. 2) A novice's medium-sized tank (50 litres to 90 litres) housing a mixed community of hardy, inexpensive, quiet, medium-sized fishes: Two male and four female pearl gouramis. Two male and four female dwarf gouramis. Six angelfish. Six Corydoras. One Ancistrus. 3) A… [cont.]

A. I kept freshwater for 20 years before I decided to do saltwater. Everything I read beforehand said to start with a tank at least 30 gallons (I picked a 29 gallon I had but wasn't using). Withing 6 months, I was ready to move up to a 55 gallon, and kept the 29 gallon as a saltwater tank as well. I'm now up to three saltwater. It's addictive! Once you get the tank set up (the biggest time and money consumer), there really isn't that much difference or work to them. At least that's my opinion, and I still have both types. There's a little more to the equipment, such as a protein skimmer (used to remove dissolved organics and small particulates from the water that would otherwise add to the nutrient load), a hydrometer (used to mix the… [cont.]

A. I will second liveaquaria.com They are excellent to deal with if there is a problem, plus there is a 14 day arrive alive guarantee. I've ordered from them before for saltwater fish and they stand behind the guarantee 100%. I ordered 4 fish, 3 didn't make it (bad batch of fish) and I got the money for those fish plus shipping back, so in turn I only paid for 1 fish shipped to my door for free.

A. Decide what style you are going for. A community tank with dozens of small fish can look pretty impressive, especially a huge school of tetras as a main feature. Then lots of other little fish like loaches and corys fossicking about. Big tank like that could hold 50+ small fish. Or you can go with larger community fish. Angels, gourami, tinfoil barbs, rainbowfish. Again these fish aren't agressive, but could swallow a neon tetra, by accident or on purpose. Less fish, but larger more interesting ones. Or you can go with agressive fish like cichlids, just one Oscar for a tank like that or a couple of smaller ones. Maybe a tough pleco in there too. There are of course all sorts of weird exotic fish, but really I wouldn't recommend many… [cont.]

Asked by James M - Mon Sep 29 14:49:34 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Patches is right. Difficulty of keeping/maintenence is what makes some fish exotic rather than common/easy to keep. You are asking for polar opposites here. Easiest- probably mollies. Most exotic- wow, that's really open-ended. Ummm... polypterus ornatapinnis is a pretty long shot, but I read can still be bred by a VERY dedicated keeper. If you can keep your water in pristine condition, Discus may be right for you. They will breed pretty readiyl under the right conditions, and have vivid colors and many variations.

A. If you were experienced in the hobby, you wouldn't be asking this question. You would be better off starting out with something simple and working your way up. Fish can require a lot of care, and you should know what you're doing before just jumping in.

I want a very exotic plant for my fish tank That is beautiful and will have a flower of some sort?
Q. Needs to be cheap, easy to get, and easy to take care of. Tank is only 10 gallons so nothing that gets too big.
Asked by Jebarj90 - Tue Mar 6 15:45:33 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, it depends on your lighting. If you have a lot of light, then you have more options. But for now, I'd suggest anubias. They do flower, but it's not easy to get them to, so read up on them. Even if they don't flower, they are very pretty and easy to grow even if you don't have a lot of light.

Asked by quickquestion - Sun Jul 15 16:08:17 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. OK, you will be restricted to a certain degree, but first off I'm not sure what red tip sharks are they may have a different name here, however if they are from the same family as the Rainbow/Ruby shark that's grey/blue body and red fins? then within a few weeks they'll be battering each other to death and you'll end up with just one. Sharks should be kept as singles or more than about 10 to stop individuals being killed in the squabbles. Your butterfly fish puts paid to any surface fish under 3 or 4 inch's, anything that's not quick is going to be eaten if it goes near the surface. There's a fish called a reed fish, its a fish but looks like and eel this will grow to about 12" + so would fit in your tank, downside they'll eat anything… [cont.]

A. It depends. There is a lot of work involved in fishkeeping, more than most people realize. What you need to do will depend on if you have a freshwater or a saltwater aquarium. The most important thing you can do if you want healthy fish is to research before you buy!!! Figure out what type of fish you want, and do lots and lots of research--look at many sources--to find out what size tank it needs, what tankmates it can have, what it should eat, etc. Research what you need to do before you set up your tank (again, this will vary depending on what setup you go with--saltwater or freshwater), and research what kind of maintenance you should do each week (for a freshwater tank, you should be doing 50% weekly water changes).
