What types of exotic fish should i get?
Q. We have a 10 gallon fish tank, we want fish like trigger fish and puffer, but the box fish is toxic. We need little fish that are exotic but not toxic. Any suggestions?

A. Unless you are going to set up a nano reef, which becomes VERY expensive, here is a freshwater alternative. Add 2 teasoons of aquarium salt to the tank to make it brackish. Made an enviroment with large rocks and small hiding spaces. Then get 10 bumblebee gobies (they are awsome!!) You can then add either 2 figure 8 puffers OR 1 green spotted You can also put a mono in there, but then you could only have 1 figure 8 puffer. The bumblebees dont really count toward the bioload, but puffers are very messy eaters and will quickly overwhelm a 10 gallon. Also, in such a small tank they will fight over territory. Figure 8's are not quite as cute as green spotted but they are much less agressive. Remember that puffers jump so keep a… [cont.]

What are some exotic cool fish for a 10 gallon tank?
Q. What would you say are exotic fish for a 10 gallon tank?
Asked by Chris - Mon Nov 5 17:47:41 2007 - - 16 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think Glo-Lite Tetras are neat - if you're not opposed to genetically enchanced tropical fish. The most exotic freshwater fish I've ever had is a Dwarf Puffer - unfortunately, they're really aggressive and WILL eat your other fish. Had a couple of my tetras that lost their tails/fins to the Puffer & died shortly thereafter. Tetras were supposed to be "fast enough to get away" but erghm... they weren't. You can definitely keep an interestingly beautiful 10-gallon tank by having a good variety of fish. If you get tetras, I would stick with those. Barbs do well together. There are also the spendidly energetic & beautiful Danios. Just keep your groups similar & you'll be fine. There are lots of different varieties & types of fish. Good luck! [cont.]

A. I don't know how experienced an aquarist you are, but if you've got the experience under your belt for it you might try an arowana, red tailed catfish, or clown knife fish. I don't have experience with any of these--and I don't honestly know exactly how big they get or what size tank they need (I'd guess any one of those would get big enough to need the tank to itself), I just know they are pretty exotic. I myself have a Black Ghost Knifefish, which isn't REALLY rare and exotic, but it also isn't in most people's tanks (when someone comes to my house, they've never seen anything like it and are mesmerized by it), and its a really beautiful, graceful fish and is a lot of fun, can be trained to eat out of your hand, even play in your… [cont.]

What's an exotic fish than can be kept alone?
Q. I'm a college student and like most I have a tight budget. However, I'm madly in love with animals of all shapes so when my Fire Skink Wilbur passed, I decided to put his large tank to use. I'm looking for a fish that's easy to moderate in terms of care that I can keep by itself. I've looked into Eels and Wrasse the most [I'm into snakes so the long, large fish really appeal to me] and would like something with bright coloring. Salt water or fresh water would work. Thanks in advanced!

A. One of the best fish to keep by itself is a tire track eel. They are intelligent and will learn to recognize you if you are the only one who feeds it. It can also be trained to take food from your fingers if you are patient. You don't say how big the tank is, but a 20 gallon would be about the minimum starter tank for a tire track eel. Eventually they get kind of long (up to 28") so you would need to upgrade to a larger tank (probably about a 40-50 gallon) in a couple years. They are beautiful fish too. Go here for much more detailed info on the tire track or "spiny eel."

A. Depends how long you want to keep it alive. You need a good sized tank (ie 50 gal at least) as they get pretty big and need to swim and you probably don't just want one fish in the tank, but I would not have more than one of this species. You need a good heater, water filter system (under gravel type), and aeration system, sized for the tank. You need a few inches of a base material, like crushed coral or better, aragonite sand. You need salt to make the salt water. Use Instant Ocean per the instructions. Get some live rock which will add bacteria that is needed. What you use to decorate is less critical. You'll also need all the chemical kits for measuring and treating the aquarium. FYI, setting up a salt water tank is not… [cont.]

A. It's hard to say without knowing your constraints. In other words... ~ Are you talking about freshwater, brackish, or saltwater fish? ~ Do you already have a tank? If so, how big is it? ~ Do you already have some fish? If so, what are they? Picking cool fish is easy. Picking cool fish that can fit in a certain tank and get along with certain tankmates is the hard part. Some of my favorites that are pretty or unusual (or both): Freshwater: ~African Butterflyfish ~Black Ghost Knife Fish ~African Leopard Bush Fish (Leaf Fish) ~Guppies (this may not count as "exotic" to you, but I think they are beautiful) ~Ropefish (actually, I'm a fan of any eel-like fish. If you have the right setup you could even get a freshwater eel, but… [cont.]

A. I will second liveaquaria.com They are excellent to deal with if there is a problem, plus there is a 14 day arrive alive guarantee. I've ordered from them before for saltwater fish and they stand behind the guarantee 100%. I ordered 4 fish, 3 didn't make it (bad batch of fish) and I got the money for those fish plus shipping back, so in turn I only paid for 1 fish shipped to my door for free.

Asked by sa31cowboy - Sat Dec 8 11:04:15 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. 55-gallons is good for a pair of Angels. Keep in mind though, that they will need peaceful, slow-moving tank-mates. Also, Angelfish do not fall into the 1" per fish per gallon rule. They need at least 10 gallons per fish. Check out these sites for info on fish requirements/compatibilit y. Make sure you research tank cycling before you even think about getting any fish!!

define native fish and exotic fish?
Q. I tried google but I get species types, you like frogs, etc. I want native fish and exotics.
Asked by Jr - Mon Jul 27 16:06:22 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Native fish are the species that occur naturally in the waterbodies of a given place. These are the species that evolved in that area and are perfectly integrated into the local food webs. Exotic fish species are those that are native to some other place in the world. Sometimes exotic fish are released in foreign areas on purpose (for instance, I live in Argentina and the Patagonian rivers have trout, which are exotic here because they are from the Northern Hemisphere). Sometimes the exotics are kept as pets or bred for their meat, and they escape (such as the carp, which is Asian but has invaded many rivers around the world). The names of native and exotic species for your area will depend on your location.

A. If you were experienced in the hobby, you wouldn't be asking this question. You would be better off starting out with something simple and working your way up. Fish can require a lot of care, and you should know what you're doing before just jumping in.
