Dvd Player Facts

A DVD player is a device that plays discs produced under both the DVD-Video and DVD-Audio technical standards, two different and incompatible standards.

Technical Details

A DVD player has to complete these tasks:

  • Read a DVD disc in ISO – UDF version 1.2 format
  • optionally decrypt the data with either CSS and/or Macrovision
  • read and obey the DVD's Regional lockout codes and display a warning if the player is not authorised to play the DVD
  • decode the MPEG-2 video stream with a maximum of 10 Mbit/s (peak) or 8 Mbit/s (continuous)
  • decode sound in MP2, PCM or AC-3 format and output (with optional AC-3 to stereo downsampling) on stereo connector, optical or electric digital connector
  • output a video signal, either an analog one (in NTSC, PAL or SECAM format) on the composite, S-Video, SCART, or component video connectors, or a digital one on the DVI or HDMI connectors

What causes my phillips dvd player to skip?
Q. I have had this player for five years and sometimes I get a disc from the movie store adn it sticks and skips. Is the problem my dvd player or the dvd? I could not find an answer anywhere online.

A. Usually when a DVD skips, the DVD is scratched or dirty. This happens a lot on rental DVDs. You want to clean it, but you don't want to scratch it more. Plain water will do, but you want to be careful, and only wipe from the inside toward the edge. Do NOT wipe around the disks, as that can aggravate the damage.

What is the best portable DVD player for a toddler?
Q. My son loves to use his portable DVD player in the car. He recently dropped his and it broke. I am wondering if there is one out there that is very durable, and can with stand the abuse of a toddler. Any suggestions would be GREAT!

A. I love this player for my toddler! It has a carry handle so she can easily carry it, and no flip screen to bust off. She's also dropped it a few times on wood floors, no damage!

What portable DVD player can you attach a video game system to?
Q. I often take long rides and i am going to by a portable DVD player. I have not found one yet that you can attach a video game sysyem to.

A. it depends i have a portiple dvd player and my game systems dont work with it, it's because of the red, white and yellow cords. to connect the wii to a tv, or dvd player it has to have 3 openings, red, white, and yellow, if it doesn't, then no chance you can play, but most portible dvd players wont have it because it already has a dvd player in it and the red, white, and yellow cords are used for dvd players. I'm not 100% sure of this but i'm about 95.78% sure. Just ask someone at best buy if this makes no sence.
