How to discover a new use in plants?
Q. I have a science project to do. I have to discover a new use in a plant. For that I need some help. Can you help me? What should I do to find a use in the plant?

A. At first, You have to find out, what the plant contains, f.e. Alcaloides, Vitamines and so on. Then you start a search for use of those contents in medicine and ethno-medicine and for the plant or parts of it ( Rhizoma, Herba, Flora, Semen etc ) too. If You ask for the scientific term, You should find more results. If You find a difference between use of contents and wellknown use, You can check, if there is enough active substance in Your plant or if You can concentrate it by an extract f.e. and You found a new medical use. If You are looking for other uses, check, if You can find fibers for tissue, or strong branches for brooms, or oil for Bio-Diesel, use Your phantasy. Hope, You understand my terrible English!

Can anyone file a motion to discover on a case where the informants names are blacked out?
Q. My friend went to prison due to informants' (people he knew) testimonies. These names have been blacked out and I wish to have them revealed as I have been accused of being an informer and I want to clear myself of it. Can an outside party request a motion to discover?

A. Probably not (assuming you're writing from the US). Although there's a right to confront witnesses, that's been curtailed for a number of reasons (witness is a victim minor, personal danger to witnesses, etc.) And you probably can't make discovery motions unless you've actually filed a lawsuit and it doesn't get thrown out.

What are some ways to discover an unknown substance?
Q. I have a science project and I need to have different ways of finding what an unknown substance is (we are doing a CSI movie scene where an "unknown substance" is discovered on the victims body) We need to explain how to discover what it is and calculations on how we discovered it... any ideas?

A. Well, there's always the flame test for cations. IR spectrometry for organic Flame emission, flame absorption or inductively coupled plasma spectrometries. UV/VIS SEM (secondary electron microscope) for structure and size. There are more, of course, but this should give you a start. Good luck.
