What is the relationship between covered bridges and old mills?
Q. I need to know why covered bridges were built near mills back in "the days".

A. Both are on the water. Their proximity is no accident. Mills, in the old days were important social centers. In Holland the miller was the most important man in town. Watch "A Dog of Flanders," to see the millers impact. Also, an amusing movie on other levels. The bridges in America were covered, I think to keep ice from forming on the bridge. Some say it is to calm the horses as they trot over fast moving streams.

How can I make Chocolate Covered Pretzels without a double boiler?
Q. I would like to make chocolate covered pretzels for a party tomorrow, but all recipes are calling for a double boiler, but I do not have one. I was wondering how to make them without a double boiler. Thanks In Advance!!

A. You can melt the chocolate in the microwave very slowly but I've never had much success with that. What I would do is heat water in a saucepan and put a metal bowl over the top of it to melt the chocolate in. You can get a metal bowl at one of those dollar stores if you don't have one. This is in effect a makeshift double boiler. Good luck, sounds yummy!

What makes a covered bridge so interesting?
Q. I was a fan of covered bridges long before the book or movie about "The Bridges of Madison County." Both sets of my grandparents lived in Madison County, Iowa. They took me and the other grandchildren to several of the bridges and we got to walk through them and hear the history of the covered bridges. Maybe you don't have an interest in covered bridges but what about old barns or homes?

A. One of my favorite subjects to paint is old barns and covered bridges, and one bridge painting took a blue ribbon at the state fair a couple years ago. Here in central Indiana we have around 30. Sadly, they are favorite canvases for teenagers with spray paint, and targets for arsonists. We lost the longest bridge in Indiana a few years back for that reason. There's just something so romantic about them. And I love old barns -- what character they have! We have hundreds in this county alone. I even live in an old farmhouse -- built 1906. Original wood floors, woodwork and transoms - love it! You sure don't see that in today's cookie cutter houses.
