What are cool fish to have in an outdoor pond?
Q. I have a 7'long x 5' wide x 2-2 1/2' deep pond. Approximately 570 gal. What are cool, colorful, fun to have fish in it? Besides shubunkins, i've already had those. And comets, I have little 1-2" comets in there right now. I want to add more colorful, bigger fish that won't outgrow it. I'm looking for more of a decorative/fancy fish. What are some cool fish that can be kept in a ten gallon tank?
Q. Please, none of the "mostly kept fish" i want to try something new but freshwater only. I'd like some cool fish. No: Betta Livebearers Cichlids would be cool and tetras or barbs. Thank you Tropical Fish Please

A. Ditto to Jack, good answer! In addition to that, you might be able to get a pair or trio of kirbs as well. The real problem is lack of overall space, not the bio load. With cichilds, they establish their territories and a 10 gallon tank even a 20 is very limited in space you can establish. You could rock and cave it up right to the top, the problem still lies with little overall space on the floor for them to move around and not be subject to aggression. Only one tip I can think to TRY to offset that is make sure you have only 1 male of whatever species and the balance in females. This might, and I say MIGHT allow the aggression to be reduced. If you don't want deaths over territories, only 1 male, and you may have to be moving all… [cont.]

Pirhana Plecos Clown loaches Rainbow fish Tinfoil barbs Tiger barbs Large Gourami (including kissing) SIlver Dollars Knifefish Eels Arrowana Elephantnoses Chinese algae eaters Most types of catfish (Corydoras would work well) Think along the lines of a betta OR dwarf gaurami, small sized tetras or rasboras (kept in groups of 5 or more), corydora catfish, ghost shrimp, guppies, mollies, cherry barbs... all of these types of things could work (just not all at once)

A. In my opinion a shoal of 50+ Neons or Cardinal Tetras. OR A shoal of 50+ Glofish (neon- yellow/green/red) Anything big will need a bigger tank in the future, and if not provided your fish only gets stunted, compacted organs, and shortened life span. ("'\(o.o)/"')

Could i fit a freshwater barracuda in a 55 gallon tank, if not any suggestions on a cool aggressive fish?
Q. I would like to get a fishtank and a cool, aggressive, fish. i don't have a lot of room in my dorm, an i'm not loaded w/ money so at best i could probably do a 55 gallon tank. is there anyway that i could possibly fit a freshwater barracuda in it. if that wont work what are some other cool fish of that sort. i was also thinking about piranas, freshwater puffers, maybe even a freshwater stingray. still i think i would best prefer the barracuda, but size is an issue.

A. What you want is a pike cichlid. There are different species that get different size, but a two spot pike would be a good choice for a 30-55 gallon tank. These guys are torpedo shaped eating and killing machines! They grow fast, are easy to maintain and tough as nails. They strike feeder goldfish so hard and fast the feeder just disappears in a cloud of scales. Very cool fish with a very bad*** attitude. Here's a link with some more info about them and some pics. Oscars are also cool fish, but might outgrow even a 55 gallon. The pike cichlids stay a bit smaller and would be at home in a 30 gallon. Remember, only one per tank!

A. Some good ideas here. I've bred axolotls (browns, albinos, and leucistics) so I can relate to your problem. Coolest room you have, no lighting directly on the tank, adding frozen water are all good starts. You could also try getting home insulation foam (styrofoam sheets) and cutting pieces to fit three sides of your tank. Or, aim a small electric fan at the tank - increased evaporation will also cool it a few degrees. If you continue to add ice to top the tank off, this will compensate for the extra evaporation. Ghapy's air conditioning unit is a good one, but only if you can vent the exhaust to the outside - otherwise it WARMS the room. Beyond these suggestions, a cooler would be the next step. These are expensive and some… [cont.]

Asked by torontoguy44 - Sat Oct 18 11:56:40 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I agree with Tae's post. It really depends upon the size of your tank and the amount of money you're willing to spend. Salt water fish are the most colorful, but they are also the most expensive and time consuming. African Cichlids are really colorful fresh water fish, but they can also be highly aggressive. Some species also get really big (10'' +), so they require tanks of at least 75 gallons. Some really nice community fish are neon tetras or platties (but they are small and non-aggressive, so if you like a lot of activity, they may not be the fish for you.) Take your time and research which fish are best for your size tank and pocket book.

How can I cool my fish tank?
Q. My fish tank is too warm despite the heater being set below the required temperature due to the hot weather. Is there a way I can keep it cool? Would a fan blowing cool air over the tank help during hot weather spells?
Asked by Pickles - Tue Jul 4 11:11:07 2006 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments
A. First of all - do not add ice directly to the tank! If your temperature gets any higher than 82, you can add ice into a baggie and float that for a little while. Try not to let it lower more than four degrees a day, as you're asking for shock and depressed immune response in the fish at that point. I, personally, take a couple of the snack-sized baggies and fill them with water and keep a bunch of them in my freezer. You could try a fan. I know some people have had success with this. Don't keep your aquarium light on, as it only adds to the heat. And if the temperature is getting that warm, you could try unplugging the heater, as it seems the water certainly doesn't need any help with that. If the tank is in a sunny room, try… [cont.]

Q. What would you say are exotic fish for a 10 gallon tank?
Asked by Chris - Mon Nov 5 17:47:41 2007 - - 16 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I think Glo-Lite Tetras are neat - if you're not opposed to genetically enchanced tropical fish. The most exotic freshwater fish I've ever had is a Dwarf Puffer - unfortunately, they're really aggressive and WILL eat your other fish. Had a couple of my tetras that lost their tails/fins to the Puffer & died shortly thereafter. Tetras were supposed to be "fast enough to get away" but erghm... they weren't. You can definitely keep an interestingly beautiful 10-gallon tank by having a good variety of fish. If you get tetras, I would stick with those. Barbs do well together. There are also the spendidly energetic & beautiful Danios. Just keep your groups similar & you'll be fine. There are lots of different varieties & types of fish. Good luck! [cont.]

A. OK, this got me thinking, and then sent me on a search for you. After maybe an hour searching the net I think I may have found something. Judging by your description, I think this is it. The movie was Dragons Forever (1988), the "tube" fish tank is pictured in the link below, see if that is the one you are thinking of. MFK
