Verbcomputing
NounSingular computing Plural uncountable computing (uncountable)
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Computing is usually defined as the activity of using and developing computer technology, computer hardware and software. It is the computer-specific part of information technology. Computer science (or computing science) is the study and the science of the theoretical foundations of information and computation and their implementation and application in computer systems. Computing Curricula 2005 defined computing:
A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions called computer programs. A computer requires programs to function, typically executing the program's instructions in a central processor. Computer programs are found either in executable form or as the source code from which executable programs are derived (e.g., compiled). In addition to running in a computer, the source of a program may be used to describe an algorithm to a human reader. The execution process carries out the instructions of a computer program. The instructions in the program trigger sequences of simple actions on the executing machine. Those actions produce effects according to the semantics of the instructions in the program. Computer programming is the process of writing, testing, debugging/troubleshooting, and maintaining the source code of computer programs. This source code is written in a programming language, which is a machine-readable artificial language designed to express the computations performed by the computer. The purpose of programming is to create a program that exhibits a certain desired behaviour (customization). The process of writing source code often requires expertise in many different subjects, including knowledge of the application domain, specialized algorithms and formal logic. I've heard that there is more computing power in the average $600 laptop than all of NASA had when they put a man on the moon. Is that true? Asked by A Baby Ate My Dingo - Mon Mar 10 09:21:20 2008 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments A. On the spacecraft themselves, very little -- probably less computing capability than your average pocket calculator of today. In the late 1960s, transitors were new, and incredibly large compared to what you find today, and magnetic memory was -- quite literally -- little ring-shaped magnets on wires! In fact, the microchip, which enables our pocket calculators, cell phones, PDAs, and home PCs, wasn't even patented until 1971! But they did have computers back in the '60s -- they just occupied entire buildings. And they also had lots of very smart people with sliderules, and pencil and paper, doing their math very rapidly. And the small computers they had on the spacecraft of the time did very limited tasks, and humans had to do the… [cont.] Answered by Dave_Stark - Mon Mar 10 14:25:26 2008 Do i need Higher Computing to apply to a Computing Course in college?
Q. I am currently in 6th year in my school and i am studying higher chemistry, maths, geography and intermediate 2 english. I am interested in applying for HND in software development or technical support in college in Scotland. I want to know if need higher computing to apply for computing courses. Asked by gamingguru - Sat Jan 3 10:26:57 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Depends on the school and the major. The more you learn now the easier it is. I would also suggest taking intern jobs as it helps you get valuable job experience which trust me is extremely important. I would also start playing around with computers and programming. Call up the school you want to go to and ask the Dean in charge of the computer part what he recommends or what they would want. Really though, look into helping on open source projects like gimp, mozilla firefox, blender, etc. Also in volunteering to help at tech division of companies or a tech company.
