In biological terms, a community is a group of interacting organisms sharing an environment. In human communities, intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs, risks, and a number of other conditions may be present and common, affecting the identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness.

In sociology, the concept of community has caused infinite debate, and sociologists are yet to reach agreement on a definition of the term. There were ninety-four discrete definitions of the term by the mid-1950s. Traditionally a "community" has been defined as a group of interacting people living in a common location. The word is often used to refer to a group that is organized around common values and social cohesion within a shared geographical location, generally in social units larger than a household. The word can also refer to the national community or global community.

The word "community" is derived from the Old French communité which is derived from the Latin communitas, a broad term for fellowship or organised society.

Since the advent of the Internet, the concept of community no longer has geographical limitations, as people can now virtually gather in an online community and share common interests regardless of physical location.

What are some medically underprivileged communities in New Zealand?
Q. I am a pre-med college student and I want to go to New Zealand to volunteer in a medical setting--hospitals, clinics, or something else. The program to which I am applying for funding is really interested in applicants who go to "underresourced" or "underpriviliged" communities. I've been thinking about some rural location in which there is a large Maori demographic with an understaffed medical clinic, or something like that. However, since I've never been to New Zealand, I don't know of any of these locations. Can you help?

Why do Conservative Christian communities seem to produce the most hate groups?
Q. When you hear about all the really bad incidents that followed Obama's election, just about all took place in conservative communities and states that pride themselves on how Christian they are. And when you look up the location of hate groups they also seem to thrive in these type of places like Idaho and Texas. These folk claim to go to church every sunday and learn about love and peace and joy from the bible. How does hate and bigotry come out of that?

A. I hear ya man I have often wondered this myself. I love how the try to debate this by claiming that they don't hate. Why are there always church groups standing outside places where gay people and meeting holding signs that say "God Hates F*GS" or other hateful messages? Why are church groups rising against the leader of our nation when the bible says to respect the leaders as they are there because God wants them to be there. Why are there church groups outside abortion clinics getting insanely violent and harassing those going inside. Regardless of one's views on these issues isn't the message of Christ to love one another??? I would love to see just one of them give you a sincere honest answer.
