Combat Facts

Combat, or fighting, is purposeful violent conflict intended to establish dominance over the opposition.

The term "combat" (French for fight) typically refers to armed conflict between military forces in warfare, whereas the more general term "fighting" can refer to any violent conflict. Combat violence can be unilateral, whereas fighting implies at least a defensive reaction. However, the terms are often used synonymously along with the term "Battle Ready".

Combat may take place under a certain set of rules or be unregulated. Examples of rules include the Geneva Conventions (covering the treatment of soldiers in war), medieval Chivalry, and the Marquess of Queensberry rules (covering boxing).

Combat in warfare involves two or more opposing military organizations, usually fighting for nations at war (although guerrilla warfare and suppression of insurgencies can fall outside this definition). Warfare falls under the laws of war, which govern its purposes and conduct, and protect the rights of soldiers and non-combatants.

Combat may be armed (using weapons), or unarmed (not using weapons). Hand-to-hand combat (melee) is combat at very close range, feeling the opponent with the body (striking, kicking, strangling, etc.) and/or with a melee weapon (knives, swords, batons, etc.), as opposed to a ranged weapon.

How do tours and deployments to combat zones work out in the Army?
Q. Do you go every other year to Iraq or Afghanistan? What if the war ends? Can you then stay at a base in the United States every year? I'm considering joining through OCS as a 2nd Lt. and was reading that many officers drop out due to repeated tours to combat zones.

A. It really depends on the unit you get assigned to. Some units don't do Afghanistan rotations (look for that to change in the very, very near future). Some units rotate to both Iraq and Afghanistan. Depending on who you end up with, you could hit a long dwell time (back here in the US) or not. For example, let's say you got put in the 4th Inf Division. They are currently in Iraq now. When they get back they SHOULD (but may not) get 12 months in the states. Then they are back in the mix again. Some units, like the 82nd and 101st Airborne, send Brigade size units to both Iraq and Afghanistan, and the intervals and tour lengths vary. Your likelihood of doing more than one combat tour is HIGH. We're at war...

What is the best way to combat tooh sensitivity to cold?
Q. I can't afford dental work. Now, my teeth have never been sensitive, but recently, I can't eat cold food. I like my ice cream cold and my cereal non-soggy, so simply microwaving food like this isn't an option either. Does anyone have any ideas on how to combat this recent problem? Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, i've tried Sensodyne and such, and it doesn't help much either, even after using it for a few weeks.

A. Not that I am the be-all, end-all to answers, but I have had (rather...suffered) tooth sensitivity lately. My problem was in drinking cold/cool liquids, ice cream & swishing water in my mouth when brushing my teeth. While he was checking my teeth, my dentist could not see anything wrong and said that sometimes teeth are cold sensitive. He gave me a small tube of toothpaste and it seemed to help. It's called pronamel & is put out by Sensodyne. You need to use it daily because its benefits are progressive (the more you use it, the better it protects). I won't bore everyone here with all the details, but acids in the liquids we drink can eat away at the enamel on our teeth and this can cause sensitivity. That's not to say that you… [cont.]

A. I believe full lace has eyelets that you pass your lace through and speed lace has half moon hooks that you wrap your lace around.
