What camping mattress do you recommend for somebody with a sore back?
Q. I'm not talking about RV camping here. I have a ThermaRest and every morning I wake up sore in my lower back. Is there something else out there that is light and packable?

A. I had lower back surgery a few years ago and I know what it feels like to wake up with the sore back. How thick is your ThermaRest? I use a RidgeRest on bottom, then a 25 inch wide, 2 inch thick ThermaRest, then a 25 inch wide and a 2.5 inch thick ThermaRest on top of that. I sleep very good and the mattresses stay in place. You realize that you need to sleep "in" the ThermaRest, not "on". Lay down on your fully inflated setup and let air out until it is comfortable. My 2.5 inch mattress is lighter than the 2 inch. The 2 inch is the Camp Rest which is supposed to be the warmest mattress they make. When backpacking I carry the 2.5 inch mattress and the RidgeRest. I wanted to find out more about camping sites and details of camping around Austin?
Q. This is our first time, my husband and I are planning a camping over the weekend. Is it a good time/weather to camp. Where can we go? What do we need to be prepared for? We don't own any camping equipment yet and are still exploring. Can we rent it from someplace. Answers/Sugestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

A. I don't about renting camping equipment. You might be better off trying to borrow some. Another alternative would be to do a search for cabin rentals. There are lots of cabins around the Lake Travis area. If you do manage to find some camping gear, Enchanted Rock is an awesome camping spot. It's a little cool yet, but nice for hiking and exploring.

What's the difference between wilderness and primitive camping?
Q. What's the difference between a wilderness campsite and a primitive campsite? My boyfriend and I are going camping for the first time and I just had a few questions... Are reservations really that necessary?

A. As you can see from the variety of answers, the two terms are used in various ways, with some overlap between the two. I just got back from a camping trip at a location that lists it as "primitive" because there are no hookups for water, power and sewage for RVs. However, you would never call it wilderness. It's a campground on a small public preserve, with numbered campsites packed elbow-to-elbow with each other. Each site has a steel fire pit and a concrete picnic table, and enough space for an RV or a tent. Then there's the next number, with the next fire pit and picnic table.
