A cable is two or more wires or ropes running side by side and bonded, twisted or braided together to form a single assembly. In mechanics, cables are used for lifting and hauling; in electricity they are used to carry electrical currents. An optical cable contains one or more optical fibers in a protective jacket that supports the fibers. Mechanical cable is more specifically called wire rope.

History

Ropes made of multiple strands of natural fibers such as hemp, sisal, manila, and cotton have been used for millennia for hoisting and hauling. By the 19th century, deepening of mines and construction of large ships increased demand for stronger cables. Invention of improved steelmaking techniques made high quality steel available at lower cost, and so wire ropes became common in mining and other industrial applications. By the middle of the 19th century, manfacture of large submarine telegraph cables was done using machiners similar to that used for manufacture of mechanical cables.

In the 19th century and early 20th century, electrical cable was often insulated using cloth, rubber and paper. Plastic materials are generally used today, except for high reliability power cables.

How does Time warner cable differentiate what a basic cable customer from extended basic cable?
Q. I will be getting high speed internet with basic cable (first 10 channels). How does time warner cable make sure i only get 10 channels, instead of the default 80 channels that come with extended basic cable? Do they use a stopper box like comcast ?
Asked by Mark d - Tue Mar 17 09:21:52 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Since you pay less for basic, they go ahead and install a special filter in-line with the cable outside your home, near or at the pole. They have different filters depending on the service you are paying for. You're not allowed to mess with those.

What kind of cable would I need to connect a audio and video cable to a PC monitor?
Q. Like instead of plugging the red white and yellow things into a TV, I want to connect it to my PC Monitor. Is there a cable or converter or something like that I could use, or does nothing exist like that?
Asked by John H - Thu Oct 2 22:48:02 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Some monitors support that type of cable without a converter. Tell us what monitor you have so we have a starting point for an answer. EDIT: Regarding Ross' answer, there are adapters for composite video to VGA (see link), but since we don't know what monitor the questioner has we can't say if it would work. For example, there are digital only monitors (HDMI or DVI single input) out there that wouldn't support this setup. Going back to my comment, there are also many monitors with built in composite input, so the question of an adapter would be moot. The only way to answer this question intelligently is if the questioner tells us what monitor he/she has.
