Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. A small business is a business that is privately owned and operated, with a small number of employees and relatively low volume of sales. Small businesses are normally privately owned corporations, partnerships, or sole proprietorships. The legal definition of "small" varies historically, by country and by industry, but generally has fewer than 100 employees in the United States and under 50 employees in the European Union. However, in Australia, a small business is defined by the Fair Work Act 2009 as one with fewer than 15 employees. By comparison, a medium sized business or mid-sized business has under 500 employees in the US, 250 in the European Union and fewer than 200 in Australia. In addition to number of employees, other methods used to classify small companies include annual sales (turnover), value of assets and net profit (balance sheet), alone or in a mixed definition. These criteria are followed by the European Union, for instance (headcount, turnover and balance sheet totals). Small businesses are usually not dominant in their field of operation. Small businesses are common in many countries, depending on the economic system in operation. Typical examples include: convenience stores, other small shops (such as a bakery or delicatessen), hairdressers, tradesmen, lawyers, accountants, restaurants, guest houses, photographers, small-scale manufacturing etc. The smallest businesses, often located in private homes, are called microbusinesses (term used by international organizations such as the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation) or SoHos. The term "mom and pop business" is a common colloquial expression for a single-family operated business with few (or no) employees other than the owners. When judged by the number of employees, the American and the European definitions are the same: under 10 employees. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I am a small business owner and have been developing my company for the past year. Because I left my previous job to start this business I do not have a current income and because my company only recently officially "opened for business" we do not have a profit line. Do I need to file? What about the business expenses that I incur? Asked by greg b - Mon Mar 5 18:09:43 2007 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments A. Definitely keep track of your expenses. Most start-up expenses should be capitalized until operations begin. This means that you cannot deduct certain expenses until the date the business started, even if you paid them last year. Some expenses should be amortized over a period of time. Business start-up costs are the expenses you incur before you actually begin business operations. Your business start-up costs will depend on the type of business you are starting. They may include costs for advertising, travel, surveys, and training. These costs are generally capital expenses. You usually recover costs for a particular asset (such as machinery or office equipment) through depreciation (discussed next). You can elect to deduct up to… [cont.] Answered by tma - Tue Mar 6 02:55:56 2007 What constitutes a small business according to state and federal government? Q. Answered by KMcG - Fri Aug 14 13:01:19 2009 Starting a small business. How do I get financing? Does anyone know of a good resource for good information?
Q. I'm looking into starting a small business but apparently banks don't loan to startups and there aren't gov't grants available for startups either. How do i go about getting the financing together? Are there any good resources? I am writing the business plan now. Asked by Riley W - Tue Jul 28 10:42:22 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. The posts above are a scam. Banks Do lend money to start ups, but it is harder now than normal and you are likely to have to shop banks to get a loan and get decent terms. Try to find on with a designated Small Business Banker. They will likely be able to help you better and have more experience than most branch managers. It would really help to get a little more information. (1) What kind of business are you starting? (2) Do you have anything for collateral (3) Is there a secondary source of income (are you still going to work is your souse or partner going to still work)? (4) What area of the country do you live in? (5) How much are you looking to borrow? If you can not get bank financing there are a couple of options.
