Belmont Abbey College?
Q. I'm a sophomore in high school and I'm interested in attending Belmont Abbey College in the future. I currently attend a Catholic high school in Florida and plan on moving with my mom to North Carolina in the close future. I've youtubed Belmont to see if any students have uploaded any videos. I'm interested in knowing if, when Belmont's students aren't busy with their classes and studying if they have fun? I don't think I would be interested in a school that is really conservative and the students don't have fun. Thanks!

Aspiring journalist help?
Q. I have dreamt of being a journalist since I was little due to my passion for writing and the news especially politics. In the fall I will be a freshmen at Belmont Abbey College. However, the college offers zero communications majors so I'm majoring in political science and possibly minoring in English. I also plan on writing for the college paper. How necessary is it that I have a journalism degree? Will it be impossible or very hard to become a journalist with a political science major? Are there any other majors that would be better other than a journalism or communications major? Thanks so much.

A. One of the good things about journalism is that your major doesn't matter as much as other professions. It comes down to, "Can you do the work?" I majored in newspaper and minored in political science, so there's not that much of a difference. Just write, write, write, whenever you get the chance. Look for internships. And good luck.

If I go to a Catholic College...?
Q. I might be going to Belmont Abbey or St.Thomas in Florida (my options are still WIDE open as of now) but I was wondering if being a Traditional Catholic will effect my stay in a Catholic College. I was wondering if anyone had any insight into the matter because I've never heard of a Traditional Catholic College... If you've never heard of it here is a link (or just wikipedia it for easier info)

A. Without knowing your total background (I believe there are several kinds of traditional Catholics), I think that Belmont Abbey would be your best bet. If you haven't checked out the Newman Guide for Choosing a Catholic College, I would definitely read it. You can also go onto the Cardinal Newman Society website, www.cardinalnewmansociety .org, which catalogues some of the best Catholic Universities in America. If you really want to go to a traditionalist Catholic University, I would say your best bet is Christendom College in Virginia. Although there are no colleges that distinguish themselves as "traditional" Catholic Colleges, this is the closest you will find. There are many Catholic colleges that are strong in their faith, and… [cont.]

A. I go to a Jesuit college and I am an atheist. My school is a fully accredited and nationally well known university. Many of the best schools in the country identify with a specific religion. Have any of you ever heard of Georgetown? Top 15 best schools in the country? Yeah, it's Jesuit. I personally attend Xavier University although I also got into Georgetown because it's cheaper and let me tell you, it is just as open as the liberal arts high school I attended. They have all sorts of multicultural festivals and are always having people of many different religions come to the school to speak about interfaith relations. Most of the students identify themselves as atheist or non-practicing Christians but we also have a large Buddhist and… [cont.]
