Where can I find a block for my 2000 bayliner cruiser 285?
Q. The block on the cruiser is cracked, we will find out today wether it is due to overheating or freezing. We were told it would cost $12,000 to fix. OUCH!! Is there another solution to this problem? It's a 250 HP engine.

A. Automotive people need to stay away from boats. A automotive engine will not live at the rpms we turn or live with the loads on the motors. $12G No. You need to shop around. Some places can install a drop in reman Mercury motor or a long block for less than that. Get a 1 or 2 year warranty with it. The partly dressed carb motor is about $5500, efi $6300 plus the core charge which you should get 1/2 back if the block is cracked. Look at their site. Overheating is not going to crack the block, it will seize the motor before that happens. Most all of the time it is freeze damage.

what type of wood do you use for the flooring for restoration on a bayliner boat?
Q. As of right know I'am using half inch treated ply wood. I am also wondering what is the best way to connect it to the existing wood?

A. If you're going to cover it with carpeting, then a good marine grade plywood should be OK for flooring. If the floor is going to be exposed wood, then mahogany planking would be a traditional flooring. Attach it to the floor support structure with brass screws.

can my 21' bayliner bowrider make it to Catalina Island from long beach?
Q. i have a 21' open bow bayliner with an inboard/outboard. can i make it to catalina island from long beach in this boat or is the ocean too rough? Also can it make it there and back on one tank of gas?

A. On a calm day, you might be absolutely fine. However, I wouldn't recommend it. It can be a rough ride out there once you get out between the mainland and the island. I would check tidal predictions and offshore weather conditions before I attempted it. I think the island is about 30mi off the coast. If your bayliner has an inboard (I think they all do...) then the fuel economy is somewhere in the 4.0-7.0 mpg range. Most Bayliners can carry about 20-24 gallons in the tank. If you're careful and you were to keep the boat on a plane at/around 3200-3900 RPM (it's different for every boat, but almost always between 3-4k), then you'll be getting the best fuel economy you can ask for. If you aren't careful, you're going to lose fuel… [cont.]
