Banknotes Facts

A banknote (often known as a bill, paper money or simply a note) is a kind of negotiable instrument, a promissory note made by a bank payable to the bearer on demand, used as money, and in many jurisdictions is legal tender. Along with coins, banknotes make up the cash or bearer forms of all modern money. With the exception of non-circulating high-value or precious metal commemorative issues, coins are generally used for lower valued monetary units, while banknotes are used for higher values.

How can I protect and save old banknotes?
Q. I have some very old banknotes from austrohungarian empire and other countries...the problem is that they are very very fragile and torned...anyone knows an easy way to protect them (home made) and to keep them safe? The problem is that here in Albania does not exist anymore specialized stores... :( and actualy I cannot travel abroad to get smth... Anything arranged in home...? smth homemade...

A. Laminate them & put them in a hard back book. Make sure it isn't in a damp place! That should do the trick!

How do US banknotes come home?
Q. When an American goes to France, he typically exchanges dollars for francs there. Similarly the French typically buys his dollars here. Thus physical dollar bills would pile up there and French bills would pile up here. How do the dollars come home? I can imagine 2 scenarios 1) dollars find their way to the central bank, are physically bundled and sent home, or possibly dropped off at the embassy in return for a credit. Or 2) French central bank burns them and sends a message to this effect gaining a credit at the Fed. How does it work?

What does "specimen" mean that is stamped on some banknotes?
Q. I was curious to why some bank notes in various online collections were stamped with "specimen" on it.

A. By banknotes if you mean currency, you cannot legally make a copy of our money without showing that it is a copy. They put the specimen across it to let people know that it is a copy.
