Zolpidem is a prescription medication used for the short-term treatment of insomnia, as well as some brain disorders. It is a short-acting nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic that potentiates gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter, by binding to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABAA) receptors at the same location as benzodiazepines. It works quickly (usually within 15 minutes) and has a short half-life (2–3 hours). Trade names of zolpidem include Adormix, Ambien, Ambien CR, Edluar, Damixan, Hypnogen, Ivedal, Lioran, Nytamel, Sanval, Stilnoct, Stilnox, Stilnox CR, Sucedal, Zoldem, Zolnod and Zolpihexal. Its hypnotic effects are similar to those of the benzodiazepine class of drugs, but it is molecularly distinct from the classical benzodiazepine molecule and is classified as an imidazopyridine. Flumazenil, a benzodiazepine receptor antagonist, which is used for benzodiazepine overdose, can also reverse zolpidem's sedative/hypnotic and memory impairing effects. As an anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant, the beneficial effects start to emerge at 10 and 20 times the dose required for sedation, respectively. For that reason, it has never been approved for either muscle relaxation or seizure prevention. Such drastically increased doses are more inclined to induce one or more negative side-effects, including hallucinations and/or amnesia. The patent in the United States on zolpidem was held by the French pharmaceutical corporation Sanofi-Aventis. On April 23, 2007 the U.S. FDA approved 13 generic versions of zolpidem tartrate. Zolpidem is available from several generic manufacturers in the UK, as a generic from Sandoz in South Africa, as well as from other manufacturers such as Ratiopharm (Germany). Answered by Leonardo D - Sat Oct 4 21:26:35 2008 Will eating after taking Ambien CR slow the absorption of the medicine? Q. It says on the the medication guide that I shouldn't take Ambien after eating, but what if I take the pill first? How long after taking it should I wait before I start eating? I want to experience the full effect. Asked by LCD - Tue Jul 7 00:21:29 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. .Not Medical Advice.Anytime you eat before Ambien it will affect how the pill works. If you eat before you take it the effects of Ambien will be lessened and take longer to work, the same way if you eat before you drink alcohol it takes longer to get drunk and you wont be hit as hard with the alcohol. If you take the pill first and then eat after, the pill will work better but will still be effected somewhat. Try waiting an hour after you take the pill (if you plan on being up that long) because by then the food will not automatically affect the Ambien. So yeah, thats basically how it works, if you need to know anything else or have another question about exact details/etc. let me know, I wont B.S you or give you lectures like other… [cont.] Answered by unknown - Tue Jul 7 12:55:43 2009 Can Ambien cause damage if taken over a long time period?
Q. What's the longest you can take Ambien (or a generic - traditional, not CR) without getting addicted? Can it cause any long-term damage? If so, what? And over what time period? Asked by friendofambien - Sun Jul 20 15:54:02 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. they say not to take it over 10 days a month but some people take it 30 days a month.. it is supposed to be short term only. I have been taking it for 15 years. It is VERY addictive. I got addicted because 1 a night wasn't helping so I would take 2 and then it was 3 and then it was 4.. then I tried to kill myself with them.. all I got was a really really good HIGH and I was addicted..
