The acre is a unit of area in a number of different systems, including the imperial and U.S. customary systems. The most commonly used acres today are the international acre and, in the United States, the survey acre.

One international acre is equal to 4,046.8564224 m. One U.S. survey acre is equal to ⁄15,499,969 m = 4,046.8726098 m.

One acre comprises 4,840 square yards or 43,560 square feet (which can be easily remembered as 44,000 square feet, less 1%). Because of alternative definitions of a yard or a foot, the exact size of an acre also varies slightly. Originally, an acre was a selion of land one furlong (660 ft) long and one chain (66 ft) wide; the measure appears to have begun as an approximation of the amount of land an ox could plow in one day. However, an acre is a measure of area, and has no particular width, length or shape.

The acre is often used to express areas of land. In the metric system, the hectare is commonly used for the same purpose. An acre is approximately 40% of a hectare.

One acre is 90.75 yards of a 53.33-yard-wide American football field. The full field, including the end zones, covers approximately 1.32 acres.

A. That's going to depend on the crops you grow, whether or not you can irrigate, your climate, whether you're going to be vegan or raise your own meat, etc., etc. The classic book on this is probably "5 Acres and Independence"

How much would it cost to build a similar Mohonk Resort, including the 2200 acres of land?

What is the value of 20 acres of field corn?
Q. I am thinking about leasing 20 acres of tillable land to grow a crop of field corn (not sweet corn, but field corn for consumption by livestock or use in ethanol production). My farm is in North East Ohio. I haven't factored in how much of the crop will be lost. I'm just curious if there are any people with expertise in agriculture who can help.

A. I'm going to give you some very rough estimates. The average cost of putting in a corn crop is around $440 per acre. That includes the land costs, but I'm guessing that your trying to lease 20 acres today your land costs will be higher than average. Giving you a pretty good yield of 150 bu/ac and a pretty high price of $4.00 you might make around $160 profit per acre. That would give you $3200 profit for 20 acres. Now, that is if you are a good farmer. Also machinery costs are probably going to be higher than average for you if you have to rent or hire it done, so that will also cut into those profits. The price of corn is at an all time high, which is good, but costs of everything else is going to be higher as well, so don't think that… [cont.]
