A tent is a shelter consisting of sheets of fabric or other material draped over or attached to a frame of poles or attached to a supporting rope. While smaller tents may be free-standing or attached to the ground, large tents are usually anchored using guy ropes tied to stakes or tent pegs. First used as portable homes by nomadic peoples, tents are now more often used for recreational camping and temporary shelters. Tents range in size from "bivouac" structures just big enough for one person to sleep in up to huge (circus) tents capable of seating thousands of people. The bulk of this article is concerned with tents used for recreational camping which have sleeping space for one to ten people. Larger tents are discussed in a separate section below. Tents for recreational camping fall into two categories. Tents intended to be carried by backpackers are the smallest and lightest type. Smaller tents may be sufficiently light that they can be carried for long distances on a touring bicycle, a boat, or even a person's back. Some very specialised tents have spring-loaded poles and can be 'pitched' in seconds, but take somewhat longer to strike. The second type are larger, heavier tents which are usually carried in a car or other vehicle. Depending on tent size and the experience of the person or people involved, such tents can usually be assembled (pitched) in between 5 and 25 minutes; disassembly (striking) takes a similar length of time. The military organisations of most nations use such tents to temporarily house troops living and working under field conditions. HistoryFrom Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How to find a good tent for camping? Q. I want a tent to take camping. I'd like to go to the beach, mountains, state parks, etc. One thing I worry about is rain. I've heard you can't get a true waterproof tent for a reasonable price, only water resistant. I don't want to spend $300 on a tent that I may not use that much. I just need enough room for a full size air mattress and to change clothes. Any suggestions? Oh, and it has to be one I can set up by myself. If you had one, moisture inside (from your body) condenses on the inside, and you wind up having an internal rainstorm. Water repellency is ok. Ideal you want a tent that breathes. Over it, but not touching it, goes a waterproof fly. There are a lot of factors that go into choosing the best tent for your needs. You'll find some of them discussed here: Answered by Brook E - Thu Nov 6 19:18:54 2008 What are the rules for tent camping in the French Alps? Q. Traveling the GR 5 from Les Houches to Briancon. Can I tent camp the entire way. I believe I have seen that you can camp anywhere above tree line. Asked by larray - Sat Jun 27 02:43:33 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Alpine camping is best. Pack out waste including feces and urine. Avoid avalanche chutes, rockfall, but bivy slung between two knobs amid vertical cliff is fine if you sleep wearing fall-arrest harness fixed to something that probably can't be pulled away by accident. This may work for reader on GR5 bridges at mid-span; just hang below likely exit location of traffic hurtling past to destruction below. Q. I plan on camping for a while when backpacking and I want to go surfing. I don't know where to leave my rucksack while I go in the water... Will it be safe in the tent? Are there any certain places I can leave it? Asked by John Doe - Mon Dec 28 09:38:27 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Take it with you when you go for a surf but leave it on the beach or you could dig it in the sand if your really worried but probably not the best idea to leave it in the tent. If there is A camp site operated they might have somewhere to leave your belongings.
