A shopping mall, shopping center, or shopping centre is a building or multiple buildings consisting of a complex of shops representing leading merchandisers, with interconnecting walkways enabling visitors to easily walk from unit to unit and a convenient parking area, a modern version of the traditional marketplace.

Modern “car-friendly” strip malls developed since the 1920s, and shopping malls corresponding to the rise of suburban living in the United States after World War II have been the subject of the same criticisms leveled against suburbanisation and urban sprawl in general.
