According to you, which are the most relevant commands in a network management?
Q. I'm making a research and I would like to know the most relevant commands, according to you, in a network management , between: ipconfig, ifconfig, telnet, ping, traceroute, tracert, nslookup, arp, netstat, nbstat, route, finger, whois, IPv6, snmp.
Asked by Lakshmy - Mon Nov 19 12:03:42 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, it looks like some of your commands dropped off, but I use the following the most: ipconfig, nslookup, ping, netstat, gpupdate, and gpresult the most. Of your list that showed up: Telnet, traceroute, finger, arp, whois, ipv6, and snmp are useless in my environment. Ping is almost always useless, but is decent for internal troubleshooting. Route really doesn't matter, as we have routers for that purpose. Then you have other commands like osql, net, and regsvr32 that are invaluable in certain circumstances. Netdom can also come in handy, but it's not an often used command, just valuable when you need it (of course, it's an admin pack tool). WG

A. First let me knw what are the network elements you wanna monitor... the basic concept of NMS (N/W mgt sys.) is the remote server will be TRAPed whenever changes take place in the NE...basically u need to implement UDP and over that you need to implement SNMP protocol to sense... there can be various ways...hw to get the remote visibility... it depends upon the vendors...what kinda n/w it is...IP/core Ckt s/w,converged MPLS etc.. pls let me knw some details...in this regard...I will get you the basics..

Write a plan for setting up a management solution for your network. What is a management solution? there's nothing about it in the text.

Does anyone know of some good websites for network management?
Q. The websites can be any concepts that is related to network management. Both corporate and home. I know that protocols, standards, policies, troubleshooting, Wan, just any concepts like that they deals with network management.

A. Are you referring to a home or corporate network? Edit: This is really a broad subject. If you're looking at a CIO role you need to look at connectivity between buildings such as a VPN or a WAN. Network security is always a big topic to keep in mind. Not just from people getting in, but permissions of specific data files and folders for internal security. Your password policy and enforcement is always a difficult thing to address -- since it is common for people to share passwords even when they're told not to. Troubleshooting the unpredictable. Slow network? What kind of software do you have to troubleshoot this? Ethereal? EtherPeek? Server backups and off-site backups for disaster recovery. What kind of switching equipment… [cont.]

A. Security, affordabilty, and ease of maintenance and install. I would write down what your needs are and either look online for the best product or shop in stores where sales associates can help you decide.

A. Try using Flock as your browser: It is a browser based on Firefox that is specifically setup for social networking. The great thing is, in addition to being able to manage all your social networking sites, you can still use all the Firefox add-ons.

A. Because most mgmt tools use specific ports that are blocked. You need to trust the application to the firewall first and then you can to the PC. In some cases you need to do it on both ends, some firewalls block both inbound and outbound track.

A. Word of mouth. Get in contact with the people you used to work with and see if they have heard of any positions becoming available in the near future. From my experience most jobs in TV are filled internaly or by word of mouth and recomendations from staff already working there, such as "you know how X is leaving in a couple of months, I know somebody who would be perfect for that job" TV is a very small world, hope this helps.

Network Audit And Management Software?
Q. Hi, I was hoping someone could recommend/suggest/mention a piece of software suitable for network management and audit. I'd like it to show a list/diagram of all users on the network and their details. A system for blocking IP's/MAC's/SSID's from getting network/internet access. A way to send messages to the computers in a winchat style system. Any extra features are welcome. Any software suggestions are welcome, even if it only posses 1 or 2 or any of those specified features. BTW, Plz dont suggest Network Magic. Ive tried it, its too low level, not enough control.

A. I do and I love it I am taking my test for my CISSP in the end of August and should have that soon. I also have been to the SANS training 2 time and will be back a 3rd there the best people I have found to train in the security field. I have also tried Verisign and wasn't 100% impressed with them like SANS. Take some classes from there are go for your masters from them. That will give you a big jump in the security field if you have a Masters from The SANS institute. I will be getting my from there. I have to retake some classes to get my GPA up but I will be there soon. To much parting in college so I am suffering now lol
