Why is that kids/teens can be physically abusive to each other?
Q. Why can kids/teens in school bully & beat up the other kids and not face any real consequences? But if I went to work & smacked my coworker, I would be arrested? I'm just frustrated that it seems to be more of a school issue, rather than a legal issue.

A. I'm not sure where you are from, but we arrest them for assault in Wisconsin, and they get suspended from school.

What effect is mass communication having on kids and teens?
Q. Kids and teens these days seem to have been pushed into hyper socialization by cellphones and myspace. After having a look at the cell phones, profiles, and buddy lists of some kids, I asked them how many of these people, in some cases more than 100, were "real" friends. To my surprise I discovered that most "keep in touch" with at least twenty people. I can assure you that growing up in the 80s I never even came close to knowing 100+ people. Is having so many contacts good for kids, or does it take up too much of their time and interfere with their academic and family responsibilities? A. I totally agree with you about this being a big concern. I'm only 30 and I've noticed so many changes in the way kids and teens act, but I also think it's society as a whole. Mass communciation has affected society in such a profound way and has ultimately caused a great deal of desensitization. People are bombarded by it and as a result feel as if they need to be getting more information all the time. It makes them more quick to act and more agressive and limits their ability to have more meaningful connections. Just look at how many "soundbytes" surround us now and our obsession with celebrity. Name of program to create safe haven homes for kids/teens in danger?
Q. When I was in high school my community set up a program in which families could sign up to be on a "safe homes" list. If a child or teen was in danger (due to domestic violence at home, etc)., they could go to one of the houses on the safe home list. Now that I'm an adult I'd like to register to be one of the safe homes, but I can't remember what the name of this program was. Any ideas?

A. I believe it was called the "Safe House" project. I remember the homes would have yellow and red signs in their windows. Unfortunately, the last I heard the program was discontinued because it could not afford to do background checks on everyone who applied. I did a quick search on yahoo for Safe house and got several hits for local charities, but as I said I think the national program was discontinued.
