The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope that are linked by a broad array of electronic and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries a vast array of information resources and services, most notably the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support electronic mail.

Most traditional communications media, such as telephone and television services, are reshaped or redefined using the technologies of the Internet, giving rise to services such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and IPTV. Newspaper publishing has been reshaped into Web sites, blogging, and web feeds. The Internet has enabled or accelerated the creation of new forms of human interactions through instant messaging, Internet forums, and social networking sites.

The origins of the Internet reach back to the 1960s when the United States funded research projects of its military agencies to build robust, fault-tolerant and distributed computer networks. This research and a period of civilian funding of a new U.S. backbone by the National Science Foundation spawned worldwide participation in the development of new networking technologies and led to the commercialization of an international network in the mid 1990s, and resulted in the following popularization of countless applications in virtually every aspect of modern human life. As of 2009, an estimated quarter of Earth's population uses the services of the Internet.

The Internet has no centralized governance in either technological implementation or policies for access and usage; each constituent network sets its own standards. Only the overreaching definitions of the two principal name spaces in the Internet, the Internet Protocol address space and the Domain Name System, are directed by a maintainer organization, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The technical underpinning and standardization of the core protocols (IPv4 and IPv6) is an activity of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), a non-profit organization of loosely-affiliated international participants that anyone may associate with by contributing technical expertise.

How does verizon wireless internet work and cost?
Q. I would like to have internet that I can use when I travel. What does verizon charge? And how does this work? Is it unlimited use for internet? How fast is the internet connection?

A. What kind of phone do you have? Or are you talking about the broadband wireless access card? I have an EnV, and I subscribe to Vcast to get unlimited internet, Vcast access, and Get it Now! for $15/month. If you don't mind using your minutes while you're online, there is a $5/month plan for that too. On my phone the connection is really pretty fast, as long as the webpage doesn't have too many graphics. A lot of services have special pages made specifically for mobile access- like Gmail and facebook load very quickly are are very easy to navigate. If you are looking for the broadband card, I don't personally use it, but I attached some links from Verizon's website as well as another Y!A question on this topic with a good answer below.… [cont.]

Internet Explorer-How can I set content advisor on certain accounts but not others?
Q. I have 3 user accounts for Internet Explorer. One of them, used by a minor, is a limited account. I have blocked certain pages I don't want him visiting thru Content Advisor, which I have set a password for. This works great for the limited account, but it also affects my full access "computer administrator" account by putting the same restrictions on my account. I know I can override the blocked pages by putting in my password, but I'd rather not if I don't have to. But if I set content advisor for one account, it is enabled for all the accounts, no matter what type it is. How can I set content advisor on one account only?

A. Ok,this is one area where Windows Vista is usefull,Vista has a feature called Parental Controls which allows you to restict internet access for your children without affecting your own browsing, you can also produce an activity log of what sites have been visited etc. Unfortunately it means getting Vista,Microsoft does have a free program called Windows Live Family Safety Settings which has some usefull features but I have heard reports that is not exactly user friendly but it might be worth looking at. Do a google search for it,I think it might still be in beta testing. hope this helps anyway

Q. I have ADSL connection with 1mbps of bandwidth. I have 2 computers connected to a switch and the internet bandwidth is shared among the computers. If the the other computer downloads a file from the internet the other computer slows down. Is there a way so that the 2 computers will have access to the maximum amount of bandwidth?

A. Most of the time a computer network will delegate the majority of usage to an individual computer/connection to a point, the router/switch will do this automatically to optimize that computers usage. The only way to correct this would normally be a router with a set of rules for each connection using the signal. Hope this helps
