Literature is the art of written works. Literally translated, the word means "acquaintance with letters" (from Latin littera letter), and therefore the academic study of literature is known as Letters (as in the phrase "Arts and Letters"). In Western culture the most basic written literary types include fiction and nonfiction. DefinitionsPeople may perceive a difference between "literature" and some popular forms of written work. The terms "literary fiction" and "literary merit" serve to distinguish between individual works. Critics may exclude works from the classification "literature," for example, on the grounds of a poor standard of grammar and syntax, of an unbelievable or disjointed story-line, or of inconsistent or unconvincing characters. Genre fiction (for example: romance, crime, or science fiction) may also become excluded from consideration as "literature." From Wikipedia under the

Q. I m an armature writer and my dream goal would be to win this prize. How is the literature being judged? What makes it any different from any other piece of writing? I think that overall they look at the impact of the work & how well it actively portrays life (especially American life). As far as fiction goes, most of the writing appears to be realistically set. You can enter your own work (as far as the official site says, anyway), but the pieces are sorted through before the actual event. It would be nice to win this prize, but it is by no means something that you need to define yourself as a writer. If you find greater joy in "writing outside the Pulitzer box", then do so.
